After missing the playoffs for three straight seasons, the Colorado Avalanche stormed to the Central Division crown in 2013-2014, their 112 points the second most in franchise history. Off-Season Game Plan looks at an Avalanche team that has promising young talent, but also serious warning signs heading into next season. First, the talent. Not many teams would prefer their forward core to the Avalanche group of Matt Duchene, Gabriel Landeskog, Nathan MacKinnon and Ryan OReilly -- Duchene, at 23, is the senior member, so they could be together for a long time. Defencemen Erik Johnson, 26, and Tyson Barrie, 22, as well as 26-year-old goaltender Semyon Varlamov are other core players that figure to be big parts of the team for years to come. Varlamov had an outstanding year in 2013-2014 and hes a finalist for the Vezina Trophy as a result, but goaltenders that vastly exceed past performance are likely to experience regression. Of the 11 goaltenders to post a save percentage of .920 or better in 2013, Tuukka Rask was the only one whose save percentage didnt go down and, of the other 10, the decline in save percentage went from .924 to .914, collectively. Knock .10 off a starting goaltenders save percentage and, facing 2013 shots like Varlamov did last season would mean an extra 20 goals against. Further reason for concern is that the Avalanche cant simply count on reducing the shots against. They ranked 27th in Fenwick Close, and face the prospect of losing their best puck possession forward, Paul Stastny, as a free agent. Maybe the young core will be able to take steps forward and improve those numbers, but that requires some projection and projection brings risk. Essentially, this is a cautionary post. There is all kinds of optimism around a talented young Avalanche squad that enjoyed a breakthrough season, but they are a team whose statistical profile ought to temper expectations and that makes this summers stakes significant. The TSN.ca Rating is an efficiency rating based on per-game statistics including goals and assists -- weighted for strength (ie. power play, even, shorthanded) -- Corsi, adjusted for zone starts, quality of competition and quality of teammates, hits, blocked shots, penalty differential and faceoffs. Generally, a replacement-level player is around a 60, a top six forward and top four defenceman will be around 70, stars will be over 80 and MVP candidates could go over 90. Sidney Crosby finished at the top of the 2013-2014 regular season ratings at 87.12. Salary cap information all comes from the indispensable www.capgeek.com. In the past two years, Sidney Crosby, Joe Thornton and Ryan Getzlaf are the only players with more primary assists per 60 minutes of 5-on-5 play. Thats a player generating opportunities and he used his speed to generate the best penalty differential in the league. There werent a lot of forwards who played the kind of tough minutes that Gabriel Landeskog did, while posting strong relative possession stats, and his 3.02 shots on goal per game through his first three seasons ranks 11th since 2005-2006 (post Lockout I). Like Duchene, Landeskog set a career-high in points in 2013-2014, despite playing fewer minutes per game than the year before. The first overall pick last summer, Nathan MacKinnon was eased into the lineup, playing 13:33 per game in October, but gradually took on more responsibility and was up to 19:48 per game in April (20:34 per game in the playoffs). His 63-point rookie season was impressive, and MacKinnon really took off in the second half of the year, putting up 39 points (14 G, 25 A) in his last 42 games, before adding 10 points in seven playoff games. While he was the beneficiary of fortunate percentages, MacKinnon has game-breaking speed that gives him a chance to be one of the games premier offensive threats. A knee injury limited Alex Tanguay to just 16 games last season, yet the 34-year-old remains productive. Hes a ridiculously accurate shooter and has handles increasingly difficult ice time as his career reaches its twilight. If Tanguay is fully recovered for next season, he can be a valuable contributor. With a decline in ice time, and his name in trade rumours last season, its possible that PA Parenteau could be plying his trade elsewhere next season. He has 196 points (70 G, 126 A) in 264 games over the past four seasons, and his 0.74 points per game ranks 56th in the league (minimum 200 GP), so even if he isnt ideal for the Avalanche coaching staff, there should be some appreciation for Parenteaus ability to produce offence. Checking centre John Mitchell rode some fortunate percentages on his way to a career-high 32 points, playing a bigger role than might have been expected given the Avalanches centre talent, but injuries and Ryan OReilly and Nathan MacKinnon spending time on the wings gave Mitchell lots of time in the top nine. Acquired from the Philadelphia Flyers, Maxime Talbot was given a big role with the Avalanche, playing a career-high 16:10 per game (16:19 per game with Colorado) and while Talbot has, at times, taken on tough assignments (based on defensive zone starts and quality of competition) it hasnt been enough to justify his poor possession numbers over the past couple years. Hes a solid and respected veteran, but probably doesnt need the kind of ice time hes been getting. Cody McLeod has fought 90 times over the past seven seasons, but his production has been limited and he had the worst puck possession numbers of his career last season. Part of the reason for those poor puck possession numbers is that McLeod spends much of his time skating on the fourth line with Patrick Bordeleau and Marc-Andre Cliche and that trio doesnt have the talent to keep pace. Bordeleau is a 6-foot-6 winger who can play the intimidator, but when he and McLeod are on the ice, they pack more punch than they do possess pucks. Throughout his career, Marc-Andre Cliche has been a defensively-responsible forward with no offensive upside. After six AHL seasons in the Kings organization, he earned a spot with the Avalanche last year and while he may have a defensiev conscience, Cliche was one of six forwards to play more than 800 minutes in an NHL season and register one goal or less. A tremendous young two-way player, Ryan OReilly had a career-best offensive season after moving to the wing to play with Duchene. He plays a well-rounded game, which earned him a career-high 19:49 time on ice per game last season, and figures to be a priority for the Avalanche to sign as a restricted free agent, though that comes with some complications because the offer sheet he signed last season with Calgary paid him $6.5-million in 2013-2014. Working off that base means a pricey ticket going forward, depending on how OReilly is prepared to structure his deal. Jamie McGinn is a solid physical winger who can contribute offensively, and had a career-high 38 points last season. Hes a nice complementary piece for the Avs, and has handled playing with skilled linemates, making him a good fit in the top nine. The Avalanche can still put together a legitimate top nine even if they lose Paul Stastny to free agency, but Stastnys departure would be huge -- he plays hard minutes and that helped free up Duchene for a more offensive role. Surely, his finishing ability helped earn him playing time, but Holden also had adequate relative possession stats for a team that didnt have good puck control numbers. The first overall pick in 2006, Erik Johnson has gone through ups and downs to this point, but 2013-2014 may have been as good as any in his career, taking on the tough assignments and starting more shifts in the defensive zone on his way to tying a career high with 39 points. For all the questions on the Avalanche defence, Johnson appears to be one cornerstone around which they can build. Jan Hejda gets pressed into shutdown duty, facing the oppositions best forwards and starting shifts in the defensive zone, but hes among those defencemen who get destroyed under that workload. Hes a defensive defenceman, but one that tends to spend a lot of time in his own end and, no matter how good you are defensively, if you spend that much time in your own end, pucks tend to find the net. In 2010-2011, Ryan Wilson was playing nearly 20 minutes per game on the Avalanche defence, but hes been battling injuries and has fallen out of favour on the Colorado blueline, playing a career-low 14:40 per game last season while getting into only 28 games. Hes going into the final year of his contract and may not be more than a depth player for the Avs. As part of the Avalanche plan to turn over their blueline to AHLers, 31-year-old Nate Guenin got into 68 games, after playing 32 career NHL games previously. His possession stats do suggest that theres some reason that Guenin hadnt previously been an NHL regular. The Avalanche have been exceedingly patient with Tyson Barrie, perhaps too much so, but he finally secured his place in the lineup and contributed 35 points in his last 47 games last season. His playoff was cut short by a knee injury, suffered on a hit by Wild LW Matt Cooke, but Barrie is a dynamic puck mover who should be in line for a bigger role next season. It would be conceivable that the Avalanche could lose Stastny as a free agent, then turn around and spend their money on a free agent to bolster their blueline. They could try to keep Andre Benoit, and still seek out Tom Gilbert, Anton Stralman, Stephane Robidas or Mark Fayne as guys that could play in their top four. Hes only 26-year-old, so there is reason to believe that Varlamov could be an above average goaltender going forward, but it would be more than a little surprising if he duplicated his career-best season in 2014-2015. That could be a legitimate issue if the Avalanche dont drastically improve their puck possession because a lot of their success last season was predicated on Varlamovs superior play. Looking ahead to next season, the Avalanche acquired Reto Berra from Calgary for a second-round pick and the Avs sure better have some scouting that they like on Berra, because he had an .893 save percentage in his first NHL season, ranking 37th out of 38 goaltenders to play at least 30 games. That was enough to earn a three-year contract extension. Top Prospects Player Pos. While 30 points in 59 AHL games since hardly assures that the 22-year-old is destined to make the NHL, the 17th pick in the 2010 Draft did get into three playoff games with minimal ice time. A smart young defenceman, Chris Bigras was Colorados second-round pick last summer and while he impressed in camp last season, the defensive blueliner could still play another year of junior before playing pro. A second-round pick in 2010, Calvin Pickards second pro season wasnt quite as strong as his first, but the 22-year-old remains a viable option for the future. The 11th overall pick in 2011, Duncan Siemens may not live up to his lofty draft status, but hes a tough defensive defenceman. After a mediocre rookie year, a strong sophomore season would put him in a better place as a prospect. Drafted in the second round in 2009, Stefan Elliott has 18 points with strong puck possession stats in 58 games with the Avalanche, but he hasnt been able to hold down a spot in Colorado. Drafted in the fourth round in 2010, Sami Aittokallio improved in his second pro season, and may eventually have a shot at the NHL, but he needs further development. Picked in the third round in 2012, Troy Bourke improved steadily throughout his junior career and, at the end of last season, chipped in seven points in 15 AHL games. With few premium forward prospects in the pipeline, Bourke has a chance to climb the ladder quickly. Taken in the seventh round in 2012, Colin Smith isnt big, but he was productive in junior and did enough in his first pro season, putting up 18 points in his last 25 games, to be encouraged that there is more to show. Undrafted second-year pro Andrew Agozzino has 101 points in two AHL campaigns. He may not have a high ceiling, but could have a chance to get called up if the Avalanche need forward depth. Mitchell Heard, a second-round pick in 2012, has 16 points and 239 penalty minutes in 86 AHL games. Hes tough, but will that be enough to make it to the next level? An undersized puck-moving defenceman, Will Butcher had a fine first collegiate season and the 2013 fifth-round pick should get more responsibility as he matures. Checking winger Garrett Meurs, big defenceman Mason Geertsen and Croatian winger Borna Rendulic are others to keep an eye on moving forward. On paper, it might not be the flashiest thing, compared to a lot of teams. But I like this group against anybody in baseball, said Tim Hudson, who started for the Giants and went 7 1-3 innings, leaving hours before the game ended. Whod have thought wed have came here and won the first two? Everybody in America probably didnt think we had a shot. But everybody in this locker room knew that we did.The teams tied the mark for most innings in a post-season game and set a time record at 6 hours, 23 minutes. They combined to use 17 pitchers and 24 position players. After a while, Giants rookie Joe Panik said, every inning just kind of ran into the next.Said Craig Stammen, one of eight relievers used by the Nationals after starter Jordan Zimmerman was yanked while ahead 1-0 with two outs in the ninth after walking Panik: The two worst things in baseball are boredom and frustration, and we were battling both of those tonight.Somehow, Washington was shut out for 15 innings after Anthony Rendons RBI single in the third. The Giants can close out the best-of-five NLDS at home Monday in Game 3, with Madison Bumgarner a€” who tossed a shutout against Pittsburgh in the wild-card game a€” facing Doug Fister.Im sure its going to be a quiet flight, said Zimmermann, who threw a no-hitter in the regular-season finale, then allowed only three singles Saturday.Could be quite a sudden end to 2014 for the Nationals, who won the NL East and led the league with 96 wins. But after a pair of one-run losses, theyre looking as if theyre the latest team that cant figure out how to get past San Francisco.Down to their final out Saturday, the Giants tied it in the ninth on Pablo Sandovals RBI double off Drew Storen a€” the closer who blew a two-out ninth-inning lead in Game 5 of the 2012 NLDS against St. Louis.Petit entered in the 12th and threw six scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out seven, to earn the win.I was trying to get as much as I could out of him, manager BBruce Bochy said.ddddddddddddHunter Strickland got the save with a scoreless 18th.By then, the temperature was in the low 50s; the Nationals used a hot-air blower in their dugout.Roark came on in the 17th. An inning later, he threw a 94 mph fastball on a full count to Belt, who missed 96 games this season because of a broken thumb and concussion and was 0 for 6 Saturday until that at-bat. When he drove the ball into the second deck beyond right field, Belt dropped his bat and admired the shot as the Nationals Park crowd fell silent. When Belt got to the dugout, teammates slapped him on his head.I just wanted to get on base for the guys behind me a€” Get em on, get em over and get em in. Fortunately, I put a good enough swing on it, Belt said.Only one other post-season game in baseball history lasted 18 innings a€” when the Astros beat the Braves in a 2005 NLDS game that Hudson started for Atlanta. That one held the previous record for most time, at 5:50.Bochys Giants, who won the 2010 and 2012 World Series, were built to win this sort of marathon. They are relentless. They dont quit, Bochy said. We had our hands full tonight. In sum, San Francisco stays calm and collected. More than could be said for Washington, which had three of its best hitters a€” Denard Span, Adam LaRoche and Bryce Harper a€” go a combined 0 for 21, and had manager Matt Williams and second baseman Asdrubal Cabrera ejected in the 10th after arguing a called third strike.Cabrera slammed his bat and helmet to the ground, then began yelling at home umpire Vic Carapazza, getting right in his face. That got Cabrera tossed. Williams pushed his player out of the way and also got kicked out. Fans began booing ball-and-strike calls; they cheered when a foul ball ricocheted off the screen behind the plate and hit Carapazza in the 18th.Williams was asked afterward about the decision to lift Zimmermann, who retired 20 batters in a row until walking Panik a€” after the rookie launched a deep fly that barely sailed foul. Why did we decide to take him out? Because if he got in trouble in the ninth or got a baserunner, we were going to bring our closer in, Williams said. That is what we have done all year.Storen gave up a single to 2012 NL MVP Buster Posey, then the double to Sandoval that made it 1-all. Posey tried to score on the play, but shortstop Ian Desmonds one-hop relay was in time for catcher Wilson Ramos to tag Posey. NAPLES, Fla. -- A windy afternoon along the Gulf Coast of Florida played right into the hands of Sandra Gal on Friday in the LPGA Titleholders. Gal controlled the flight of her ball and picked up three birdies on the back nine at Tiburon Golf Club, giving her a 3-under 69 and a three-shot lead going into the weekend of an LPGA Tour finale that pays $700,000 to the winner. The 28-year-old German has spent much of the year working on a shorter swing and hitting a variety of shapes and trajectories, and that was put to good use in the blustery conditions. And the fact she opened with a 64 didnt hurt. "My advantage was yesterday," Gal said. "Shooting 8-under was big. Today it was hard for everybody to catch up. Thats what gave me that three-shot lead." Gal was at 11-under 133. Sun Young Yoo, the former Kraft Nabisco champion, had a 68 and was alone in second. The degree of difficult was best measured by what Yoo considered her best shot of the round -- a 6-iron on the 18th hole that didnt even hit the green. "Im very pleased with how I played," Yoo said. "I recovered very well." Lydia Ko, the 16-year-old from New Zealand making her pro debut, played her final 10 holes without a birdie and finished at 71, leaving her nine shots behind. "I thought I played much better today than yesterday, but the score was the same," Ko said. "I left a couple of my putts short just in front of the hole. Then when I got my speed right, the direction was wrong, so that was kind of frustrating." Gal hasnt won since her inaugural title at the Kia Classic two years ago, and her biggest disappointment this year was not getting picked for the Solheim Cup team. She felt her game was turning around, but not in time to warrant a captains pick. Instead, she might have to settle for the biggest payoff in womens golf. To win this week would amount to one-third of her career earnings. "Its easier for people to say, I dont care about the money, I only want to play well. But they dont mean it, right?" she said with a smile. "But Im not out here to play for money. Im out here to play with heart and to inspire others. Its a huge purse. But at the end of the day, when you win a tournament, youre happy about fighting and overcoming fear." Cristie Kerr had to fight plenty hard to get another 69 and lead the group at 6-under 138, five shots behind. Kerr thought she took take a 6-iron through a gap in the trees on the par-5 opening hole, and instead knocked it into the water. She had to drop in pine straw, and sent her fifth shot over the green. Her chip hit the pin, allowing her to tap in for a double bogey. What followed was a "horrendous" shot at the third (bogey) and a "horrible" shot on the fifth into a bunker. But she saved par, and that changed her thinking. "I wasnt going to let this tournament go down the toilet," she said. Kerr then ran off three straight birdies, knocked in a 15-foot birdie putt on the 12th, and then holed an 80-foot putt for eagle on the 17th that put her back in the mix. "On 17, I mean I was just due. I dont know how to describe it any other way than that," she said. Morgan Pressel had a 67, the low score of the second round. Four players failed to break 80. Inbee Park was within a shot of the lead early in the round, reaching 7 under, until she fell back to a 72 and was seven shots behind. Park headed off to rehearse her speech one last time before accepting LPGA player of the year at the awards dinner Friday night. Most players are nervous to stand before a big room for such a big moment. "Ive had a lot more pressure," Park said with a smile, a reference to going after a fourth straight major earlier this year at St. Andrews. Stacey Lewis (73) and Suzann Pettersen (72) were in the group at even-par 144, significant only as it relates to the Vare Trophy for the lowest scoring average. Pettersen would have to finish nine shots higher than the American to win the award. Gal stayed in the lead most of the day, and one last birdie stretched her lead. She would expect to make birdie on the 17th, the shortest of the par 5s. Just not this way. She hooked her tee shot into the trees and wasnt sure she could find it. "Happy to find my ball," she said. "Had a swing -- very happy. Had an 8-iron and thought, Lets go for the pin, and almost holed it out. Made the putt (from 15 feet). All very simple Never in doubt." TreQuan Smith Saints Jersey . Harris long jumper at the buzzer gave the Magic a 91-89 win over the Sixers on Wednesday night in a game between two 0-4 teams. The Magic avoided what would have been their first 0-5 start since 1990-91, their second season as an NBA team. The Sixers are 0-5 for the first time since the 2001-02 season, when they lost their first five games as the defending Eastern Conference champions. Making matters worse, center Nerlens Noel left the game with a sprained ankle in the third quarter and did not return. Harris made his winner from just inside the 3-point line on the right wing, shooting it over Sixers forward Luc Mbah a Moute, then running down the court toward the Orlando bench in celebration. It came after Henry Sims tied the score for Philadelphia at the other end on a straightaway jumper with 4.6 remaining, his only bucket of the game. Harris ended with 18 points for the Magic, who were coming off a 98-90 loss in Chicago on Tuesday night. They are 24-5 in the last 29 meetings with the Sixers and 14-4 in their last 18 games in Philadelphia. Nikola Vucevic added 17 points in the win, Channing Frye scored 13 with 11 rebounds and Ben Gordon had 15 points off the bench. Tony Wroten continued his hot start with 27 points to lead the Sixers, who finally played a close game after losing their first four by an average of 13.25 points. Brandon Davies added 20 points and K.J. McDaniels had 12 off the bench. Noel, who missed all of last season with a knee injury he suffered as a freshman at Kentucky, rolled his ankle under the basket and limped off under his own power. The team announced soon after that thhe ankle was sprained.dddddddddddd As far as how long it will keep him out, Im not sure, Sixers coach Brett Brown said. The Sixers had 10 turnovers in the first three quarters, then 10 more in the fourth. The Magic turned the ball over 21 times in the first three quarters but only three times in the fourth. The game was tied 52-52 at halftime and 75-75 after three quarters. Noel had four points, two rebounds and three assists before leaving, including a behind-the-back bounce pass to Alexey Shved for a layup that finished off a 3-on-1 in the second quarter. McDaniels also made the highlight reels for Philadelphia in the second quarter when he threw down an alley-oop off Wrotens pass despite being fouled by Moe Harkless. A 3-pointer by Frye sparked a 9-0 run by Orlando, but the Sixers tied the score behind 15 first-half points from Wroten, who scored 11 of them in the first quarter -- including nine Sixers points in a row during one stretch. Philadelphia had the biggest lead of any team until that point when Mbah a Moutes dunk made it 64-57 midway through the third quarter. The Sixers led by eight after that, but another 3-pointer by Frye led to a 12-2 Orlando run. Game Notes Wroten had eight assists and five steals. He is averaging 20.8 points in five games and joined Allen Iverson as the only Sixers players since 1985 with 104 points and 17 steals in the first five games of a season ... ST. LOUIS - The St. Louis Rams have been very rough on Arizona Cardinals quarterbacks. It hasnt helped the bottom line.Though Drew Stanton was carted off with a right knee injury, just like Carson Palmer was a month ago, the Rams couldnt get enough done on offence. At the end of the game they were down to their third-string guy, defensive end Chris Long said after a 12-6 loss Thursday night. Theyve got enough players that they made more plays than us.Chandler Catanzaro kicked four field goals and the Cardinals overcame the loss of quarterback Drew Stanton with stifling defence, getting a sack and fumble recovery from Larry Foote. When people go down, we dont even ask how bad it is, Foote said. We just keep rolling. We definitely dont want our quarterback getting hurt. We just say on the defensive side, Lets hold them.Coach Bruce Arians said Stanton had a previous knee injury so will need an MRI exam to determine the extent of the damage. Wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald seemed to believe Stanton would be out a while, and added about Lindley, Were going to rally around him. Were a resilient group, Fitzgerald added. Weve got a great defence, too.The Rams (6-8) were held to Greg Zuerleins two short field goals and had five three-and-out series in the third quarter. Catanzaros 23-yard field goal early in the second quarter ended nine quarters of shutout defence by St. Louis, which beat Washington and Oakland by a combined 76-0 the previous two weeks. Our defence kept us in the game, tight end Jared Cook. We couldnt capitalize on them flipping the field for us.Its the third time this season the Rams were held to single-digit scoring, and first in five games since Shaun Hill recaptured the quarterback job.Just mental errors, which is the bad part, Hill said. Physical errors are going to happen. Were humans. But on a short week, we have to be dialed in that much more and not have the mental errors and the mental breakdowns.Ryan Lindley was ineffective in his first appearance since 2012 in relief of Stanton, who injured his right knee on rookie Aaron Donalds sack in the third quarter, but it didnt matter. Palmer sustained a season-ending knee injury during their 31-14 victory over St. Louis at home last month. The Cardinals (11-3) entered tied for the top overall record in the NFC and will clinch a playoff spot if Sundays Dallas-Philadelphia game doesnt end in a tie, or a Detroit loss combined with a Green Bay victory.I thought our defence played well enough for us to win, coach Jeff Fisher said, but quickly added a turnover would have been nice. In situations like this, when your offence is struggling, your defence has got to make a play. We were close. The Rams were eliminated from playoff contention.Ryan Lindley was ineffective in his first appearance since 2012 in relief of Stanton, who injured his right knee on a sack in the third quarter, but it didnt matter. The Cardinals lost Carson Palmer to a season-ending knee injury during their 31-14 home victory over St. Louis last month.Kerwynn Williams was the Cardinals offensive standout with 75 yards on 15 carries. Stanton was 12 of 20 for 109 yards and Lindley was 4 of 10 for 30 yards. The Cardinals (11-3) entered tied for the top overall record in the NFC and will clinch a playoff spot if Sundays Dallas-Philadelphia game doesnt end in a tie, or a Detroit loss combined with a Green Bay victory.Rams players had no apparent protests relating to unrest in nearby Ferguson. Two weeks ago, five players did the Hands Up, Dont Shoot pose coming out of the tunnel during pre-game introductions, and last week players wrote I Cant Breathe!!! on wrist bands and cleats.Rams rookie Tre Masons fumble gave the Cardinals a short field that set up Catanzaros first field goal. Frostee Rucker punched the ball free and Foote recovered at the St. Louis 27.It was the first score given up by the Rams since Nov. 23, when San Diego scored the winning touchdown with just over 8 minutes left in a 27-24 victory.Michael Floyd 49-yard reception set up Catanzaros 44-yard field goal that put the Cardinals up 6-3 midway through the second. Catanzaro made kicks of 51 yards and 46 yards in the second halfBoth teams had key defenders active coming off ankle woes. Arizonas Antonio Cromartie and St. Louis Chris Long had been questionable.Arizona committed five penalties on its first two possessions, twice wiping out big gains. Shaun Hill was 4 for 4 with completions of 21 yards to Benny Cunningham on a screen and Cory Harkey for 16 yards to set up Zuerleins 24-yard field goal in the first. Zuerlein missed an extra-point kick and two field goals inside the 40 last week.Last month, Arizona outscored the Rams 21-0 in the fourth quarter, with two defensive touchdowns, to come from four points down to win 31-14. After that game, St. Louis benched Austin Davis in favour of Hill.Notes: Fitzgerald was held in check against a team hes dominated with seven receptions for just 30 yards. Mapp danced through Torontos defence to score on Montreals only shot on net as the Impact salvaged a 1-1 draw in the first leg of the Amway Canadian Championship against a TFC side missing star striker Jermain Defoe. "Hes a lovely man, he goes about his business quietly," Nelsen said of Mapp. "That was a classy classy goal, to tell you the truth, and the only way I think really they were going to score, to break us down. "Sometimes you have to tip your hat." Defender Doneil Henry scored the lone goal for Toronto. The draw could be considered a victory for Montreal, since road goals carry more weight. If next Wednesdays second leg in Montreal was to end in a 0-0 tie, the Impact would win based on Mapps goal at BMO Field. "Coming away, the first leg, you score an away goal, its very important," said Impact coach Frank Klopas. "But also I felt we finished the game the second half, we played some good soccer, we had some good opportunities, and so its a good result on the road. But nothings done yet." The draw was the latest chapter in a Canadian Championship battle between these two teams. Toronto has won four of the six titles, Montreal has won the other two, including the inaugural tournament in 2008, and then last year. The winner earns the right to represent Canada in the CONCACAF Champions League. Toronto dominated possession for most of the night, and had five shots on net to the Impacts one in front of 18,269 mostly red-clad TFC fans at BMO Field. Nelsen sat Defoe because the former Tottenham Hotspur star was feeling "a wee bit tight." The coach admitted that, with the lineup he fielded, he was looking ahead to Saturdays Major League Soccer game against the visiting Columbus Crew. "But in saying that, I put out the team that I thought should have won that game," Nelsen said. "We gave a lot of guys a chance to prove themselves, and it looked a bit like they hadnt played together, sometimes it wasnt pretty. But they worked hard." Henry leapt to head home a corner from Daniel Lovitz in the 20th minute, a blistering shot from the top of the six-yard box that Impact goalkeeper Evan Bush had little chance of stopping. The goal was a positive -- finally -- for Henry, whos been mired in negatives lately. Most recently, in Torontos 2-2 draw at Sporting Kansas City, a foul by the Toronto defender inside the box cost the team a Kansas City penalty shot. "For Doneil, he showed his character," Nelsen said. "Obviously hes had a couple of tough ones that everybody likes to remind him of. Its the ability to get back on the horse and get back in the arena that I love about the kid." Mapp tied the game in the 70th, dribbling through Torontos back line and beating a lunging Steven Caldwell to fire a shot past keeper Joe Bendik. "Just collected it on thhe right side, started driving toward the top of the box.dddddddddddd . . ultimately nobody put pressure on the ball and I found myself at the top of the 18 and just had a go. Snuck in," Mapp said. "Nice of him to say," he added, when told of Nelsens praise. "Just trying to stay consistent and do my job each week. Its been tough for us, just trying to play my part, and hopefully it continues." "Tough" is an understatement for a Montreal team that has been struggling mightily this MLS season, looking nothing like the squad that made the playoffs last season. Montreal sits dead last in the league with one win, six losses and four draws. Toronto FC is 4-4-1. But the Impact picked up their pace in the second half, and are in the drivers seat heading into Wednesdays game. "It was tough, (Toronto) had a little more bite (in the first half), winning all the second balls, the soccer really wasnt pretty from either team," Mapp said. "But its Toronto-Montreal Cup final and at halftime, we just said Look, leave it all out there, and good or bad, you just dont know when youll have this chance again." Klopas raged about the refereeing in his post-game news conference. "For me to come here again and complain with the referees. Two clear hand balls in the box, for me its embarrassing. Its embarrassing," he said. "It was a good game played by both teams. . . but me the referees, to be talking about two clear hand balls. . "If youre going to have a final, at least let the players decide, not the referees making calls like this. For me, its an embarrassment." Nelsen said he had little sympathy for the opposing coach. "Talk about bad calls, weve been on the back end of a few of them this season, so Im not going to feel too bad for Frank," Nelsen said. Toronto controlled possession for much of a game that saw few scoring chances by either side. Dwayne De Rosario, who is tied for the tournaments all-time lead in goals with four and won back-to-back tournament MVP honours (2009 and 10), almost put Toronto up by two goals in the 58th minute when he rung a hard shot off the crossbar from about 25 yards out, drawing groans from the crowd. DeRosario sat on the turf in disbelief at his bad luck. De Rosario had another great chance in the 70th, lobbing a high ball over the head of Bush, who was well out of his net. But Heath Pearce was there to head the ball off the goal-line. De Rosario would have a third chance in the 84th minute, when Toronto was awarded a free kick just outside the 18-yard box, but he fired it high of the net. Lovitz had perhaps the best opportunity in the first half, one-timing a rebound off a beautiful cross from Ashtone Morgan. But he launched it well over the top of the crossbar. Toronto, which is 7-1-3 all-time against the Impact in Canadian Championship action, defeated the Vancouver Whitecaps to make the final, while Montreal edged second-division side FC Edmonton to earn its spot. JOHANNESBURG, South Africa -- The Lions extended their unexpectedly bright start to Super Rugby when they beat the Blues 39-36 for the first time since 2006 in a see-saw battle at Ellis Park on Saturday. Although the hosts were outscored five tries to three by the team from Auckland, Marnitz Boshoff landed four penalties and two dropped goals to give them their third win in five games since returning to the competition. The Lions missed out on Super Rugby in 2013 when they lost their place to the Southern Kings, and were expected to struggle after earning their way back into the tournament through a playoff victory. However Saturdays win put them fourth in the standings, while the Blues were 13th after a third loss in four games. The first half belonged entirely to the Lions, as they bounced into the break with a 17-0 lead. After the game had gone scoreless for the first 30 minutes, Blues prop Charlie Faumuina was yellow carded for collapsing a maul close to his own tryline, and two minutes later scrum-half Francois de Klerk capitalized on the numerical advantage to score the games first try. Boshoff added the conversion and a dropped goal, before Courtnall Skosan went over on the stroke of half-time gave the Lions a significant advantage. Boshoff added a penalty after the break to push the gap to 20 points, and the Blues earned a second yellow card when Tom Donnelly failed to use his arms whilst clearing out a ruck. However when the lock returned, the Blues came roaring back into the match with two tries in three minutes to narrow the deficit to eight points. Coenie van Wyks try with 20 minutes remaining gave the Lions some breathing room, but the Blues kept coming and Frank Halai held off a defender to score under the posts moments later. Boshoffs penalty made it 33-22 with 10 minutes to play, only for centre George Moalas converted try to put the Blues within four points. However a couple of penalties from Boshoff made the game safe, ensuring that Benji Marshalls 80th minute try gave the Blues no more than a losing bonus point. ------ Lions 39 (Francois de Klerk, Courtnall Skosan, Coenie van Wyk tries; Marnitz Boshoff 3 conversions, 4 penalties, 2 dropped goals), Blues 36 (Charles Piutau, Bryn Hall, Frank Halai, George Moala, Benji Marshall tries; Chris Noakes 2 conversions, penalty, Simon Hickey 2 conversions). Adidas Miikka Salomaki Jersey . -- Miguel Angel Jimenez quickly shifted his focus back to the Ryder Cup after winning his first Champions Tour event. ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- Jim Schwartz was hired to turn around the Detroit Lions and he did it for three seasons. He failed to keep the Lions going in the right direction the next two years -- and it cost him his job. The Lions fired Schwartz on Monday, one day after their late-season slide ended with a loss at Minnesota. He had two years and nearly $12 million left on his contract. Schwartz informed the players of the decision during a team meeting. "I feel awful for him," Lions centre Dominic Raiola said. "I feel like we let him down." Team President Tom Lewand said the search has begun for what he thinks is one of the most -- if not the most -- attractive opportunities for a head coach in the NFL. "I can verify that by the number of calls we have already gotten since the announcement was made," Lewand said. "Going through a thorough process is extremely important. That doesnt necessarily it has to be a long process." San Diego Chargers offensive co-ordinator Ken Whisenhunt is among the potential candidates. Whisenhunt led the Arizona Cardinals to the Super Bowl during a six-year run as their coach and Lions general manager Martin Mayhew is a former Washington Redskins teammate. The Lions also let offensive co-ordinator Scott Linehan and wide receivers coach Tim Lappano seek other jobs, saying the rest of the staff is under contract, including some assistants for the 2014 season. Detroit flopped to a 7-9 record this year after a 6-3 record start put the franchise in a position to win a division title for the first time since 1993. "That is the reason we are sitting here having this conversation," Lewand said. Schwartz was 29-51 over five seasons, including a 10-6 mark in 2011 that lifted the Lions to their only post-season appearance this century. The former Tennessee Titans defensive co-ordinator was hired in 2009 when Detroit was coming off the NFLs first 0-16 season. "Jim inherited a very tough job," Mayhew acknowledged. Schwartz led the Lions to two wins in his first year, six the next and to double digits in victories two years ago for the first time since 1995 to help them end an 11-year post-season drought. The Lions lost their last eight games last year after a .500 start. They collapsed again this season with four straight losses and six in a seven-game stretch -- blowing fourth-quarter leads in each setback -- after they took control of the NFC North race. Detroit and the 2000 San Diego Chargers are the only NFL teams since 1940 to lose fourth-quarter leads in seven games in a season, according to STATS. "From where we were in 2008 to where we are now its a big diffference," quarterback Matthew Stafford said.dddddddddddd. "We owe a lot of that to him. Hes a really smart guy and helped us get to where we are. Obviously, we didnt win as many games as we needed to or as we should have this year." The Lions took on the personality of their demonstrative and emotionally charged coach and that wasnt always good news for them. When Detroit ran the ball instead of having turnover-prone Stafford throw late in regulation of its 23-20 overtime loss to the New York Giants in Week 16, the crowd reacted with a loud chorus of boos. Schwartz responded by looking away from the field and screaming something toward the stands. Schwartz negated a video review and was called for unsportsmanlike conduct by angrily throwing a challenge flag last season when Houstons Justin Forsett scored after two Lions tackled him, leading to a defeat during an eight-game, season-ending slide. The previous year, Schwartz had a heated exchange with San Francisco coach Jim Harbaugh and had to be separated following their postgame handshake. "The stuff that happened with Harbaugh just was an incident," Detroit guard Rob Sims said. "The stuff with the fans just was an incident. Thats not an everyday occurrence." Schwartz was 12-32 in games in November or later for a .273 winning percentage that was the worst for a coach in five-plus straight seasons with a team since Denvers Lou Saban won one-quarter of those late-season games from 1967-1971, according to STATS. His .363 winning percentage overall with the Lions is the worst by an NFL coach in his first five full seasons since John McKay won fewer than 30 per cent of his games with the expansion Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 1976-1980. The Lions gave Schwartz an extension entering the 2012 season, when he had one year left on his four-deal worth about $11 million. The second contract made him the longest-tenured coach the franchise has had since Wayne Fontes led the Lions from 1988-96. Bobby Ross, Gary Moeller, Marty Mornhinweg, Steve Mariucci, Dick Jauron -- on an interim basis -- and Rod Marinelli all had a chance to lead a franchise with only one playoff victory since winning the 1957 NFL title before Schwartz got a shot to be a head coach for the first time at any level. The Lions would like to hire someone, who runs a 4-3 defence and has head coaching experience, but theyre not going to overlook assistants who fit the profile theyre looking for. "The goal isnt to hire the biggest name or the most popular candidate and win the next press conference," Lewand said. "Its to win football games in 2014 and to win a championship." MONTREAL -- Coach Tom Higgins calls working with general manager Jim Popp "a match made in heaven." And the pleasantries exchanged between the two men on a conference call on Tuesday made it hard to imagine they were rivals for the Montreal Alouettes head coaches job. That was settled when team owner Bob Wetenhall insisted that the jobs of coach and general manager be kept separate, and that Popp would have to stick to his GM duties. "This is the model that has made us successful," said Wetenhall. "This has given Jim the time and the freedom to go out and build our team, year after year, always with a few new players added. "To have a GM with the freedom and the time to do this is the model we really wanted to go back to." In the 59-year-old Higgins, the Alouettes hired a CFL veteran who spent seven years as a head coach in Edmonton and Calgary, winning a Grey Cup with the Eskimos in 2003. The Woodbridge, N.J., native spent the last six years as the leagues director of officiating. "Tom brings a winning record and a tremendous reputation as a stand-up, high class guy," said Wetenhall. Popp, the teams general manager since it returned to Montreal in 1996 who is considered among the CFLs best, had hoped to continue in both jobs after taking over from the fired Dan Hawkins, who had no previous CFL experience, only five games in to the 2013 campaign. When Higgins was confirmed in the job on Monday, it raised speculation that Popp may be on his way out. Wetenhall would not confirm Popps long-term status with the club, but made it clear he wanted his GM to stay. And Popp, whose name has been linked to NFL jobs in recent years, said hes wants to carry on. "Ive been with the Alouettes for 18 years -- I plan on being there, its my other home," said Popp. "Ive had six children that were all born in Montreal and I really have no interest in leaving. "Circumstances come up, but the organization knows how loyal I am. Im a company man and its a place I enjoy being. Theres a lot that gets thrown around out there, a lot of it thats not true. But Im very happy." That Popp joined in the conference call was a surprise. His name wasnt mentioned in the Higgins announcement. And it was unusual that the general manager was not involved in the decision to hire the head coach. Wetenhalls son Andrew, a team governor, said that as a candidate for the coaching job, Popp would have been in conflict of interest if he had a say in who the next coach would be. But Popp had provided the owners with a list of potential coaching candidates with an assessment of their abilities. "This is a case where two people can work together who didnt select one another," said Andrew Wetenhall. "We have the added benefit of two guys who know each other and have a heck of a lot of respect for each other." Higgins said he didnt feel awkward at all working with Popp. "I couldnt be happier," he said. "I think our personalities complement one another. "We both want the same thing. This is an opportunity for myself to get back on the field where I belong. This is not a challenge whatsoever." Higgins first job will be to hire an offensive co-ordinator and fill out the coaching staff, which he expects to complete within 10 days. The Alouettes had already signed defensive co-ordinator Noel Thorpe to a two-year contract extension on Dec. 4, with the added title of assistant head coach. They also confirmed that Andre Bolduc, a former CFL player and head coach at Sherbrooke University, was signed as a defensive assistant coach. Wetenhall said one of Higgins assets was his ability to work with young quarterbacks, which will be needed in Montreal this season. For the first time since 2000, they will not have Anthony Calvillo as the starter as the CFLs all-time passing leader has retired. Troy Smith, the 2006 Heisman Trophy winner, and youngster Tanner Marsh are expected to compete for the starting job, with Alex Brink also in the picture. Higgins said he has worked with gifted young pivots before in Henry Burris and Ricky Ray. He feels the Alouettes can improve on last years 8-10 season. "Ive always marvelled at the level of talent in Montreal," he said. "I hope to bring a level of consistency and discipline. "We are going to be competitive and entertaining. And when you start doing that and playing disciplined football, usually you win more than you lose." Buccaneers Stitched Jerseys . It was just business as usual for the Thunder at home. The Winnipeg Goldeyes took a lead into the ninth inning on Tuesday night and lost in 11. Wednesday night, they turned the tables on the St. Paul Saints. Luis Alen singled in the bottom of the ninth to drive home the winning run as the Goldeyes came back from 2-1 deficit with two runs in the ninth to grab a walk-off 3-2 win over the Saints. It was a terrific ball game in front of 5,011 at Shaw Park, as Goldeyes starter Pete Gehle and Saints starter Anthony Clagget battled for eight innings. Claggett gave up one run on five hits over eight complete innings, while Gehle allowed just two runs on six hits through 7.2 innings. With the win, the Goldeyes avenged Tuesday nights series-opening loss to St. Paul, a 9-8 heartbreaker. In that one, Winnipeg led 8-7 heading into the ninth and gave up one in the ninth and lost on an unearned run in the 11th. The Goldeyes also put a stop to a three-game losing streak and improved to 22-21 on the season. "This was a big win for our ball club, but an even bigger win for our pitching staff," said Goldeyes manager Rick Forney. "No matter how good our bullpen has been, we cant keep going into the late innings down a run or ahead by just a run. Eventually, these guys are going to give up a run. Theyre only human. Tonight, we put together a great ninth inning and got an important win. "And Pete (Gehle) was awesome. He pitched an awesome ball game for us tonight." St. Paul scored a run in the fourth as Joey Becker doubled and eventually came around to score on a fielders choice groundout by Brandon Tripp. Jose Hernandez made it 2-0 on a solo homer in the seventh. Winnipegs first run came in the bottom of the seventh when Josh Mazzola doubled and came home on an RBI double by Luis Alen. But until the ninth, with closer Matt Meyer on the mound, the Goldeyes just couldnt mount a consistent offensive attack against Claggett. "Weve been getting great pitching and great defense all year," said Forney. "We didnt do much offensively for eight innings tonight, but the guys ground it out. Thats why you play the whole nine innings. Our hitters kept battling, had some good at bats and won a ball game. It was a big win for us." Allen Caldwell (1-0, 1.23 ERA) got the win in relief of Gehle, who really was outstanding. Meyer (4-4, 3.22 ERA) suffered the loss in relief of Claggett who was also terrific. The Goldeyes and Saints will meet in Game 3 of this four game series on Thursday night, 7:00 p.m. at Shaw Park. Grey wont reveal exactly what he and Young worked on. Suffice to say, the Athletics young staff ace is pleased with the results. Brandon Moss hit a tiebreaking RBI double in the fifth inning, and Gray bounced back from two sub-par outings to lead Oakland over the Texas Rangers 4-2 Wednesday, giving the Athletics (44-28) the best record in the majors. "Overall it was a pretty good outing," said Gray, who had won just two of eight starts before going seven innings against Texas and striking out seven. "I dont think there really is a difference other than I was able to make pitches," he said. "Thats probably it. People sometimes forget that baseball is a pretty hard game and theres going to be some rough patches that youre going to go through." Grey (7-3) bounced back nicely from his recent rough stretch. The right-hander needed only 31 pitches to get through the first three innings, then struck out Brad Snyder on a high 95 mph fastball to end the fourth with runners at second and third. Grey also got help from left fielder Yoenis Cespedes, who made a leaping catch at the warning track to rob Adrian Beltre of extra bases two batters before Snyder struck out. His lone mistake came in the fifth when Texas loaded the bases with two outs. Gray walked two and gave up an infield single before Shin-Soo Choos two-run single made it 2-2. "Its just balance for him," As manager Bob Melvin said. "He knows his delivery (and) his mechanics pretty well, and Curts terrific at pointing out subtle things. There are a couple things hes been working on." Cespedes and Josh Donaldson each had two hits for the As. Oakland has won four of five and is a season-high 16 games over .500. Their record is one game better than cross-bay rival San Francisco. "Anytime in the season that you can say you have the best record in baseball, its satisfying," Melvin said. "But theres a lot of baseball yet to be played. At least for the time being it feels good." Luke Gregerson pitched the eighth, and Sean Doolittle worked the ninth for his ninth save.dddddddddddd Nick Tepesch (2-3) went five innings for Texas. Choo drove in both runs for the Rangers. "We have to get more than five innings out of our starting pitching and we have to have a shutdown inning after we score runs," Texas manager Ron Washington said. "Somehow that (Oakland) lineup is always functioning. Somebody is always having a good day." Melvin shuffled his lineup and didnt start centre fielder Coco Crisp and second baseman Eric Sogard. Oaklands offence didnt miss a beat. John Jaso replaced Crisp in the leadoff spot and knocked in the As first run with a double in the third. Craig Gentry, who filled in at centre field, added two hits and scored a run. Second baseman Alberto Callaspo also had two hits. That was enough for Gray, who gave up two runs and six hits. He improved to 8-2 with a 1.90 ERA in 13 career starts against teams from within the As division. "He was keeping us off balance," said outfielder Alex Rios, who doubled off Gray in the fourth. "He managed his slider well. and his fastball had good velocity. He was locating it well." Cespedes scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the inning. He singled off Tepesch and scored on Moss double to right, barely beating the throw home with a headfirst slide. After Donaldson singled Moss to third, Stephen Vogt hit a short sacrifice fly to left to put Oakland up 4-2. Tepesch remained winless since May 26. He allowed nine hits over five innings with two walks and one strikeout. NOTES: Doolittle hasnt allowed a run in 22 1/3 innings, the longest active streak in the AL. ... ARLINGTON, Texas -- Yu Darvish let out a good yell and pumped both fists before catcher Chris Gimenez greeted him in front of the mound. The Texas ace wasnt necessarily celebrating his first complete game in the major leagues. His battery mate says he does that all the time. "He just kind of looked at me and goes, Yeah! Thats what I said back to him," Gimenez said. "He likes going Yes! all the time. We kind of goof around with each other about it." This was their best reason yet to have a little fun. Darvish struck out 10 in his six-hitter, Shin-Soo Choo broke a long hitless streak with a three-run double and the Rangers denied Miamis bid for a record interleague winning streak, beating the Marlins 6-0 Wednesday night. Darvish (7-2) struck out the side in the eighth to end a streak of one baserunner in each of the first seven innings for the Marlins. The Japanese right-hander wrapped up his 73rd career start by getting Garrett Jones to swing at a pitch in the dirt. Gimenez had to finish it off with a throw to first. The closest Darvish had come to a complete game were the two times he lost a no-hitter with two outs in the ninth inning. The first was a perfect game bid against Houston last year. The other was against Boston a month ago, although a scoring change a few days later altered that. "I wasnt really conscious of throwing a complete game," Darvish said through an translator. "I thought I was going to be out of the game after the eighth inning, but when (manager Ron Washington) told me that Im going in the ninth inning as well, I decided to go. And I also wanted to face (Giancarlo) Stanton again." Darvish gave up his final single to Stanton leading off the ninth, but Casey McGehee grounded into Miamis third double play before Jones whiffed. "I dont think we really have anybody like that," Miami manager Mike Redmond said when asked what NL pitchers compared to Darvish, who was facing the Marlins for the first time. The Marlins had to settle for tying the New York Yankees (2003-04) and Tampa Bay (2004) for the longest interleague winning streak at 13 games. It was Miamis first interleague loss since last Aug. 12 at Kansas City. The Rangers (32-34) snapped a four-game losing streak and avoided falling four games under .500 for the first time since 2008. Texas split the two-game set and is now winless in eight straight series at home. Choo was in an 0-for-18 slump when he pulled a line drive past Jones at first with the bases loaded in the third against Jacob Turner (2-4). When Stanton couldnt cut off the ball in right field, Elvis Andrus scored easily from first for a 3-0 lead. Choo had a single in the fifth that again brought home Andrus, who had three hits. "I needed just one hit, one good hard it," Choo said. "I tell myself every pitch, start over, start over, start over." Darvish, who won his fourth straight start for the first time in Texas, blew a 4-0 lead in his last start against Cleveland but still got the win in a 6-4 Texas victory. There were no such threats this time, and Darvish has allowed one earned run in 37 2-3 innings over his past five interleague starts. Marcell Ozuna helped Darvish by getting thrown out at second base by left fielder Michael Choice after a leadoff single in the seventh. Justin Bour followed with a walk, but Darvish started a double play on J.T. Realmuto to end the inning. Jones had one of the singles on a 59 mph curveball before Darvish struck out Ozuna looking on a knee-buckling slider. Darvish, who threw 116 pitches, got Stanton swinging on another slider in the sixth. Turner finished the fourth inning after getting hit on the right side by a line drive from Rougned Odour, but the right-hander didnt come out for the fifth. He gave up six hits and five earned runs. NOTES: This was the first meeting between the Marlins and Rangers since July 2011. They play two more in Miami on Aug. 19-20. ... The Rangers agreed to terms with top draft pick Luis Ortiz, a high school pitcher from California. The deal for the right-hander includes a $1.75 million signing bonus. He will report to the Arizona League after graduating from high school Saturday. Cheap Seahawks Jerseys . Ward stole a pair of goals from Winnipeg centre Bryan Little in the first period, beginning with a pad save during a Jets two-man advantage and then displaying his quickness with a highlight-reel stick stop. Little was about to fire the puck into a wide-open side of the net, but Ward whipped out his stick and the puck hit the paddle. "It was a fun save," Ward said with a chuckle after making 34 stops. "The initial shot was in a position where I knew I was going to have to kick out a bit of a rebound. Just out of pure desperation, I threw my stick out there and made a save that brings you back to the ol street hockey days as a kid. "But Little, I think he got even with me scoring that second goal in the third period so it all evens out." Jets head coach Paul Maurice, who coached the Hurricanes for parts of 11 seasons, even tipped his hat to Ward. "Cam Ward was the story of this hockey game," Maurice said. "He was the best player on the ice." The Jets had mounted a 9-0 advantage in shots on goal on the way to a 13-6 gap at the end of a scoreless first period. Ward then got some offensive help from his teammates, as brothers Eric and Jordan Staal and Riley Nash each scored within a span of two minutes and 53 seconds in the second. Defenceman Andrej Sekera had a pair of assists for the Hurricanes (31-31-9) to give him 31 on the season to go with 11 goals. Jets centre Jim Slater had scored his first goal of an injury-marred season 7:48 into the second, but Eric Staal got the roll going 37 seconds later with his 17th goal of the season. Little scored his 21st goal of the season for Winnipeg (32-31-9) 1:27 into the third period. Al Montoya stopped 29 shots while making his fourth straight start in net for Winnipeg since Ondrej Pavelec went out with a lower-body injury. Hes expected to return to action next week. Montoya was pointing the finger at himself for the loss. "We came out firing. Their goaltender played well," Montoya said. "I didnt make the saves I needed to make and at the end of the day that cost us the game." Maurice said Montoya was wrong. "If a guy is clearly the reason youre in the hole, Ill get him out of the net before that happens," Maurice said. "They get to this level thinking they should stop everything. He will feel that because hes got a front-row seat to the way tthe guy at the other end is playing so its magnified.ddddddddddddquot; Carolina head coach Kirk Muller said Wards stellar play was inspiring for his teammates. "The guys knew that he was giving a great effort and he was keeping us in there," Muller said. "They were like, Hey, weve got to surround him with some better play here and, fortunately, we got timely goals. We played better the rest of the game and it was a nice team effort for everybody." Ward has battled through two injuries this season and was bumped to backup for Anton Khudobin, who was in net for Carolinas 3-2 loss to Chicago Friday night. Carolina returns home for a game Tuesday against the New York Islanders. Winnipeg, which heads out on a five-game road trip beginning Monday in Dallas, remains at 73 points. Heading into the game, the Jets were six points back of the final wild-card spot in the Western Conference. The Jets were coming off a 5-4 overtime win against Colorado on March 19. The loss to Carolina was Winnipegs 40th one-goal game this season and they are 18-13-9 in those outings. Jordan Staal made it 2-1 when he went through Jets defenders and scored over Montoyas blocker at 10:10 of the second while Slater was in the penalty box for tripping. Maurice said Winnipegs first period was "about as good as were going to play," but Staals power-play marker hurt. "No doubt we got tight at 2-1," he said. "You could feel it." The Jets, who were outshot 21-8 in the second, were working without defenceman Zach Bogosian, who left the game in the period with an upper-body injury that Maurice said isnt too serious. It appeared Stuart tied it up six minutes after Littles goal, but the goal was waved off for goaltender interference as Jets defenceman Dustin Byfuglien fell on top of Ward in the crease and was lying on his right arm. Winnipeg pulled Montoya with about 65 seconds left in the game and swarmed Ward, but the veteran held tough. The Jets outshot the Hurricanes 15-5 in the third. Notes: Jordan Staals power-play goal was the first the Jets have allowed at home in five consecutive games. Winnipegs penalty kill was ranked fifth-best (84.8 per cent) in the NHL heading into the game … Both the Jets and Hurricanes are 2-3-0 in their last five games … The game was the second one of Carolinas 18th set of back-to-back games this season. With the Toronto Raptors celebrating their 20th anniversary season in 2014-15, Josh Lewenberg and TSN.ca take a look back at the franchises first two decades with weekly Top Five lists, counting down the standout and signature players and moments in team history. Today, we look back at the best trades and the general managers who made them. 1. Acquired the draft rights to Vince Carter and cash from Golden State for the draft rights to Antawn Jamison - June 24, 1998 (Glen Grunwald) The most important trade in Raptors history was merely a formality. Yes, Toronto selected Jamison, who would switch hats with his college teammate on draft night, but it was Carter the Raptors had targeted all along. Of the two, Jamison actually had the better body of work at UNC and was known to be the Warriors preference, selecting fifth overall. So Grunwald, drafting for the first time as general manager, nabbed the forward with the fourth pick, immediately swapping him for some cash. Sold after watching his pre-draft workouts, Grunwald saw something in Carter and his instincts didnt deceive him. While Jamison would go on to have a very good 16-year career, Carter was the franchise-altering star the Raptors desperately needed coming off a horrendous season. 2. Acquired Kyle Lowry from Houston for Gary Forbes and a first-round pick - July 11, 2012 (Bryan Colangelo) Although Lowry had been on Colangelos radar for some time - with this trade, or a variation of it on the table weeks before the trigger was ultimately pulled - the Rockets point guard was his consolation prize. To think what might have been if the Raptors courtship of the deteriorating Steve Nash had come to fruition? What condition would the organization be in now and where might Lowrys career have taken him? The trade that never was - a vetoed deal to send him to the Knicks 17 months later - also deserves mention here. In the end, Lowrys move to Toronto worked out better than anyone could have imagined and with the Rockets retooling at the time, the price was minimal. Houston would end up repackaging Torontos pick to Oklahoma City in the James Harden deal and the Thunder selected centre Steven Adams 12th overall in a weak 2013 draft. 3. Acquired Antonio Davis from Indiana for the draft rights to Jonathan Bender - Aug. 1, 1999 (Grunwald) Giving up a first-round pick, let alone a lottery selection, is always a calculated risk but Toronto was playing with found money in 1999. In a three-team trade youll find further down on this list, the Raptors gave up a young Chauncey Billups and acquired a future first-round pick from Denver, a pick that turned out to be the fifth overall selection. Coming off their best season to date, Carters rookie year, the Raptors needed immediate help and Pacers veteran Antonio Davis fit the bill. Davis would become an all-star in Toronto and help lead the team to three straight playoff appearances, while the oft-injured Bender - a high schooler chosen by Indiana with the traded pick - never came close to reaching his potential before his career was cut short. 4. Acquired Amir Johnson and Sonny Weems from Milwaukee for Carlos Delfino and Roko Ukic - Aug. 18, 2009 (Colangelo) Contending for championships with a veteran roster, particularly in the frontcourt, the Pistons gave up on a young Amir Johnson, the NBAs last player to be drafted straight out of high school. In the summer of 2009, they dumped him on the Bucks, another team with playoff aspirations, who repackaged him a couple months later hoping to get some immediate help in veteran Carlos Delfino. The Raptors had retained Delfinos rights when he left the league to play in Russia but he was not likely to suit up for them again. For basically nothing, Colangelo was happy to scoop up a 22-year-old Johnson, with very little milage on his tires despite four years in the association. Weems became a serviceable rotation player but the prize was Johnson, who has been a fixture in Torontos lineup for six seasons and counting. 5. Acquired Greivis Vasquez, Patrick Patterson, Chuck Hayes and John Salmons from Sacramento for Rudy Gay, Quincy Acy and Aaron Gray - Dec. 9, 2013 (Masai Ujiri) There was no wizardry at work here. As Ujiri likes to say, he and his staff had no idea how this leap of faith would pan out. They certainly had no idea it would produce the type of results it has. Some believe it was a first step in the tank-job that never was. Regardless, Rudy Gay had to go if the Raptors were going to break out of no mans land and head in either direction. With Gay gone, the team - up until recently - came together in a way that cant be quantified, Lowry and DeMar DeRozan blossomed into stars and the loot they got back in return proved valuable, primarily Vasquez and Patterson, who inked new deals this summer. The Raptors have a regular season record of 69-36 since the trade. Best of the rest: 6. Acquired Charles Oakley and Sean Marks from New York for Marcus Camby - June 25, 1998 (Grunwald) Just barely missed the top five. Oak arrived at the perfect time, bringing the veteran leadership and toughness Grunwald was looking to add to his young core. Camby become a defensive staple for New York and helped lead them to a Finals appearance. Mutually beneficial deal. 7. Acquired Michael Williams, Zeljko Rebraca and two first-round picks in a three-team trade with Denver and Minnesota for Chauncey Billups and the rights to Tyson Wheeler - Jan. 21, 1999 (Grunwald) Why is this so high? Well, Billups - coming off a rough rookie season - wasnt exactly Mr. Big Shot yet and those first-rounders the Raptors got in return turned out to be pretty useful. The Nuggets pick - fifth overall in 1999 - was swapped for Antonio Davis, while Minnesotas produced Morris Peterson 21st overall in 2000. 8. Acquired Doug Christie and Herb Williams from New York for Willie Anderson and Victor Alexandar - Feb. 18, 1996 (Isiah Thomas) Christie, a Raptor for almost five seasons, helped bridge the gap between the Stoudamire (Thomas) and Carter (Grunwald) eras. An under-the-radar acquisition that produced one of the franchises most reliable, all-around performers. 9. Acquired Jalen Rose, Donyell Marshall and Lonny Baxter from Chicago for Antonio Davis, Jerome Williams and Chris Jefferies - Dec. 1, 2003 (Grunwald) Grunwald had hoped the addition of Rose and Marshall could rejuvenate his sinking team and keep Carter happy in Toronto. Although things turned out differently, the two vets had productive, albeit brief Raptor tenures while Davis and JYD were expendable nearing the end of their careers. 10. Acquired Marcus Camby, Steve Novak, Quentin Richardson, a first and two second-round picks from New York for Andrea Bargnani - July 10, 2013 (Ujiri) The inevitable divorce. Still hard to believe Ujiri was able to snag three picks for the disgruntled Bargnani. Will be years before we know the value of them and can truly evaluate this deal. But, for now, getting basically anything for the former first-overall pick is cause for celebration. 11. Acquired Lou Williams and Lucas Nogueira from Atlanta for John Salmons and a second-round pick - June 20, 2014 (Ujiri) Still early but so far so good. Williams is in pre-injury form once again and should contend for a Sixth Man of the Year award before hitting free agency while the Hawks cut Salmons immediately to save some cash. 12. Acquired T.J. Ford from Milwaukee for Charlie Villanueva - June 30, 2006 (Colangelo) Colangelo got the point guard he coveted in Ford, an important piece in Torontos first division title, while selling high on Charlie-Vs rookie season. 13. Acquired Kevin Willis from Houston for Roy Rogers and two first-round picks - June 9, 1998 (Grunwald) Like Oakley, Willis helped change the culture of a team on the rise, mentoring Carter and McGrady in their early years. Nothing came of the picks they gave up on the deal - Rockets selected Bryce Drew and Mirsad Turkcan. 14. Acquired Keon Clark, Tracy Murray and Mamadou Ndiaye from Denver for Kevin Willis, Garth Joseph, Alexandar Radojevic and a second-round pick - Jan. 12, 2001 (Grunwald) With the 38-year-old Willis serving his purpose, Grunwald exchanged him for a dynamic centre 13 years younger in Clark and two-time Raptor Tracy Murray. 15. Acquired Antonio Davis from New York for Jalen Rose and a first-round pick - Feb. 3, 2006 (Wayne Embry) Taking over for the recently dismissed Rob Babcock, Wayne Embry pulled the trigger on a move that would free up significant cap space for soon-to-be new GM Bryan Colangelo. Rose still had a full year on his deal while Davis contract - originally given to him by the Raptors - was set to expire. 16. Acquired Rasho Nesterovic from San Antonio for Eric Williams, Matt Bonner and a second-round pick - June 21, 2006 (Colangelo) Colangelos second trade turned out to be a big step in his express rebuild. Nesterovic started 73 games for the division-winning Raptors club that year. Doubt anyone was sorry to see Eric Williams go. 17. Acquired Alvin Williams, Kenny Anderson, Gary Trent, two firsts and one second-round pick from Portland for Damon Stoudamire, Walt Williams and Carlos Rogers - Feb. 13, 1998 (Grunwald) Inheriting the GM gig from Thomas, Grunwald made the best of a tricky situation after Stoudamire forced his hand in demanding a trade. Although Anderson refused to wear a Raptors jersey, he was immediately exchanged for an asset in Billups, while Alvin Williams blossomed into one of the franchises most important players. 18. Acquired Mike James from Houston for Rafer Alston - Oct. 4, 2005 (Rob Babcock) Babcocks only appearance on this list. Although it was mostly for naught - aside from earning him a big contract with Minnesota - James lone campaign in Toronto was one of the best single season performances in team history. 19. Acquired Leandro Barbosa and Dwayne Jones from Phoenix for Hedo Turkoglu - July 14, 2010 (Colangelo) Ball. 20. Acquired Kris Humphries and Robert Whaley from Utah for Rafael Araujo - June 8, 2006 (Colangelo) Colangelos first trade. He could have dumped Hoffa for Kim Kardashian and it would have made this list. Jack Armstrongs picks: 1. Vince Carter for Antawn Jamison 2. Kyle Lowry for Gary Forbes and a first-rounder 3. Antonio Davis for Jonathan Bender 4. Greivis Vasquez, Patrick Patterson, Chuck Hayes and John Salmons for Rudy Gay, Quincy Acy and Aaron Gray 5. Moving up, from 10 to seven this week, the Pittsburgh Penguins have won seven straight despite a depleted lineup.INDIANAPOLIS - Indiana took every shot Miami could muster Wednesday night. Then the Pacers threw a couple of their own punches — and put the two-time defending champs on the mat. Paul George scored 23 points, Roy Hibbert added 21 and Indiana rallied from a seven-point deficit in the fourth quarter to beat the Heat 84-83, taking a three-game lead over Miami in the chase of the Eastern Conferences top seed. "Theyre the champs, theyre going to bring out the best in us," said David West, who made a 3-pointer with 50.2 seconds to go. "They bring out the best in anybody. I thought we just had enough fight." It was one of those rare grudge matches that actually lived up to the billing. Before the game, the teams chided one another with dueling comments. Afterward, nobody was ready to make up. And in between, the action got downright nasty. LeBron James needed a cotton swab in his nose to keep playing in the fourth quarter after getting whacked in the face. Dwyane Wade spent the final minute of the game icing his right hamstring. Pacers centre Roy Hibbert finished the game despite taking an elbow to the face that left him so groggy he didnt even remember getting hit. James and George both wound up taking spills into basket supports, and Lance Stephenson was ejected midway through the fourth quarter after picking up his second technical foul for celebrating a basket. The angry Stephenson waved his hand at the ref and after leaving the court, threw a towel and kicked a door. Coach Frank Vogel was not amused, saying he had a stern talk with his budding star guard before he went home. But it typified a rugged night for Miami (48-22). "It is what it is, they ref the game, we play it," James said. The NBAs best home team ended a two-game losing streak, took a 2-1 lead in the season series and now has the inside track to home-court advantage with just 10 games to play. And (52-20) Indiana still managed to do all of that on a night James seemed to be at his best. The four-time MVP finished with 38 points, eight rebounds, five assists, was 9 of 15 from the field and 14 of 15 from the free throw line. The problem: James also had six turnovers, Wade had six more turnovers and Miami managed only one basket over the final 3 miinutes, 23 seconds.ddddddddddddJames and Bosh both missed late jumpers that would have given Miami the lead, the last an airball by Bosh from just right of the top of the key as time expired. "Unfortunately, that was what I diagramed," coach Erik Spoelstra said. "It probably wasnt the best call. It might have been a little too gunslinger on my part. I just wanted an open shot." They were so hard to come by Wednesday night that James was even called for a flagrant foul when he drove to the basket and sent the 7-foot-2, 290-pound Hibbert crashing to the ground. When Hibbert got up, he stumbled. Eventually he had to leave the court to change his blood-spattered jersey, but he refused to sit against the Heat. Hibbert dominated the first half yet again, scoring 17 points. But when the Heat decided to make things tough on Hibbert in the second half, George and his teammates took advantage. George spurred the first fourth-quarter run with two monster dunks — one over the hand of a trailing James — to get the Pacers back in the game. Later, it was Evan Turner, the trade deadline acquisition, who delivered two of Indianas biggest baskets of the night. The first came after James final turnover, on a breakaway layup. The second came courtesy of Mario Chalmers turnover out of bounds. When the middle of the court opened up, Turner bolted through a clear path for an 81-80 lead with 90 seconds to go. "I know how to get my space, Ive been doing that forever, you know what I mean?" Turner said, likely adding another spark to a rivalry that needs none. "Some of my moves Ive been doing since I was a little kid, so I can walk a pretty fine line when it comes to that." After Hibbert made 1 of 2 free throws, Turner scored on the layups, West hit the knockout 3 and all Miami got was a 3 from Bosh with 2.9 seconds left. "Theyre a tough team, psychologically against most teams they have the edge," West said. "Theyve got the best player in the game. Their pedigree, their entire organization, you understand what youre going to get." NOTES: Indiana has won its first back-to-back division titles since 1998-99 and 1999-2000. ... ORLANDO, Florida - Opening the tournament in style, the Montreal Impact topped Fluminense FC U23 1-0 on Wednesday night at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, in its first game of the Walt Disney World Pro Soccer Classic. Midfielder Sanna Nyassi scored the lone goal. With a first half largely dominated by the Impact, the games first goal came in the 18th minute when defender Hassoun Camara found the ball just inside the box, to the right side of goal. His left-footed shot was pushed away by the goalkeeper, but fell to Sanna Nyassi. The Gambian midfielder settled the ball before firing it off of the keeper and into the net. Lefèvre, Camara and Collen Warner helped goalkeeper Troy Perkins earn the shutout by making a number of solid defensive plays, especially in the first half. The second half saw a number of changes for the blue side, including all current or former field players from the Academy on the field at the same time: Wandrille Lefèvre, Karl W. Ouimette, Maxim Tissot, Zakaria Messoudi, Victor Ndiaye, Jérémy Gagnon-Laparé and Amine Meftouh. In total, 21 players saw action for the Impact in this first game of the tournament. The Impact is now 2-0 in preseason action, following a 2-1 victory on Sunday over Orlando City SC in a friendly. The Impact will play its next Disney Pro Classic matchups with the New York Red Bulls this Saturday, February 22 at 6pm and then versus Sporting Kansas City, next Wednesday, on February 26 at 8pm. The championship game is set for Saturday, March 1. All Impact games throughout the tournament are streamed live at impactmontreal.com. "It was a better game tonight," said Impact head coach Frank Klopas. "We really pushed the play in the first. In the second, we gave some valuable experience to our young players and we managed to keep a clean sheet." "It was a better game tonight, compared to the first one," also said defender Hassoun Camara. "We had to be better physically and technically and we were today. We respected the game plan and now we have to grow from this game. I played with a little bit of pain but I keep working hard. I had some good runs down the flank but it was a collective effort tonight." "We were stronger tonight compared to our first game," said defender Wandrille Lefèvre. KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Brad Miller stepped to the plate against one of baseballs best closers in the ninth inning of a tied game, a sellout crowd rooting for him to fail. Miller silenced them all with one swing of the bat. The Seattle shortstop pounded a pitch from the Royals Greg Holland just inside the right-field foul pole, his homer breaking a 5-all tie and helping the Mariners to a 7-5 victory Friday night. "That was honestly one of the best baseball games Ive been a part of," Miller said with a grin. "Theyre one of the hottest teams in baseball and I was pumped." Logan Morrison drove in another run later in the ninth to provide some breathing room. "What a swing by Miller. Oh my goodness," he said. "He crushed it." Charlie Furbush (1-4) inherited a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the eighth, but the Mariners reliever calmly retired Mike Moustakas on a lazy popup to shallow right field. Furbush then struck out Alcides Escobar to silence a crowd of 38,475 and keep the game tied. After Holland (0-2) coughed up the lead, Fernando Rodney allowed two singles in the ninth for Seattle. But the veteran closer bounced back to retire pinch-hitter Nori Aoki on a groundout, and then he struck out Alex Gordon on three pitches to earn his 19th save. "They are big league baseball players. Big league ballplayers dont miss mistakes too often," Holland said. "I got up on (Miller) two strikes and didnt get the slider where I wanted. I made a mistake. Sometimes you pay for them and I did tonight." Morrison added a two-run homer for Seattle, which overcame a subpar start from Hisashi Iwakuma to end the Royals five-game winning streak at Kauffman Stadium. Mike Zunino added a solo shot and Robinson Cano drove in two runs, extending his hitting streak to 21 games. Moustakas hit a two-run shot to lead the Royals, who have dropped two in a row after winning 10 straight. Salvador Perez homered and drove in two runs for Kansas City. "Listen, we ran into a buzz saw. These guys are hot and everythiing is going for them," Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon said.dddddddddddd "When you run into teams like that you have to play extremely well." Iwakuma went eight shutout innings in each of his two starts against Kansas City this season, and the right-hander was headed that way again with four scoreless frames to start the game. Along the way, Iwakuma struck out the side in the first inning on just 12 pitches. Meanwhile, his offence was staking him to a 5-0 lead. Cano, who has dominated James Shields throughout his career, drove in a run off him in the first inning and another during a three-run fifth that was capped by Morrisons homer. Zuninos solo shot came in the fourth inning, a no-doubt rocket over the bullpen in left. The Royals finally broke through when Perez homered on a meaty 0-2 pitch in the fifth. They didnt stop there, either. Lorenzo Cain followed with a double, and Moustakas belted his eighth homer of the season over the wall in right to trim the Royals deficit to 5-3. Iwakuma escaped the inning, but he quickly ran into more trouble in the sixth. Consecutive singles by Billy Butler and Gordon knocked him from the game, and reliever Dominic Leone gave up the lead when Perez hit an RBI single and Moustakas an RBI groundout to make it 5-all. Iwakuma allowed nine hits and a walk in five-plus innings. It was his shortest start since July 9, 2013, when he allowed six runs and eight hits in three innings against the Red Sox. Shields went seven innings and still has not lost since May 2, a span of nine starts. "It was a great to see the crowd come out, obviously a sellout. We love it when the fans come out," Shields said of the rare packed house. "We didnt get a win for them tonight, but hopefully they keep coming out and well get some wins here." LAUSANNE, Switzerland -- Serbian tennis player Viktor Troicki had his doping ban reduced from 18 months to a year on Tuesday, although he still cannot play in next weeks Davis Cup final. The Court of Arbitration for Sport ruling "puts an end to my dreams of being a top player," the 27-year-old Troicki said in a statement. "I worked my entire life for it, and it has been taken away from me in one afternoon by a doctor I didnt know," said Troicki, whose ranking peaked at No. 12 in June 2011. It fell from No. 53 to 77 since he was suspended by an International Tennis Federation tribunal in July. Troickis appeal to CAS was partially upheld, and it ordered him to serve a 12-month ban for skipping a blood test after losing at the Monte Carlo Masters in April. He blamed a tournament anti-doping officer who he claimed advised him to write to the ITF explaining that he was ill and could not give a blood sample. He had already given a urine sample which later tested negative. "The player committed a doping offence, but his fault was not significant," the court said in a statement. Troicki will be cleared to play again on July 15, having missed four Grand Slam events while suspended. "I have no idea about what to do now or where to go. I hope somehow I will be able to fight back," he said. Serbia plays the Czech Republic in the Davis Cup final in Belgrade next week. Troicki appeared in the first two rounds this year. CAS fast-tracked Troickis case to give him the chance of reselection if his appeal had been successful. Troickis Davis Cup teammate and good friend Novak Djokovic lashed out at the World Anti-Doping Agency, saying the decision in Troickis case proved that the fight against doping is badly organized and he does not trust the system anymore. "When you are randomly selected to go and provide the test, blood test or urine test, the representatives of WADA ... who are there in the tournament, are supposed to give you the clear indications and explain you the rules and regulations, and what the severe consequences or penalties that you might undertake or you might have if you fail to provide the test," he said. "The representative, she didnt do that in his case." In 2010, Troicki won the decisive singles rubber in the final against France to give Serbia its first title. Djokovic also criticized the ATP for not standing behind Troicki. "So Viktor is there by himself. Tomorrow can be anybody else," Djokovic said. "For me this is just another big reason, another example that there are some certain things that have to be changed definitely." Troickis home federation described the verdict as "humiliating and disappointing." "Serbias Tennis Association is deeply disappointed with such a decision," it said in a statement. "Viktor Troicki has been inflicted a major injustice." ITF President Francesco Ricci Bitti said rules had to be applied strictly "to keep our sport clean." "What is harder to accept is criticism of doping control officers who perform a difficult role," Ricci Bitti said in a statement. World No. 1 Rafael Nadal also expressed support for Troicki, who he called "a good guy." "I hope to see him back on tour next year," Nadal said at the ATP World Tour Finals in London. "The doctor who accepted to make the control the next day, if thats that way, thats a big mistake from the doctor, too." The CAS panel acknowledged that the tournament anti-doping officer "should have informed the player in clearer terms of the risks caused by his refusal to undergo a blood test." The court added "there was no suggestion that Mr. Troicki intended to evade the detection of a banned substance in his system." The three-member CAS panel said that Troicki and the doping official, a Ukrainian doctor, gave their evidence in good faith in Lausanne one month ago. However, the panels ruling published by the ITF noted that "the recollection of the athlete in particular was colored by his subsequent reconstruction of events." A one-year ban was considered a "just and appropriate sanction" by the panel, and the minimum required in such a case according to ITF anti-doping rules. The ITF tribunal in July declined to impose the standard two-year ban for a first anti-doping violation because it accepted Troicki was stressed by illness on the day and his long-standing needle phobia. The ITF said Troicki remains disqualified from the Monte Carlo Masters, but retains his prize money and ranking points from subsequent events, including his run to a fourth-round loss against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga at the French Open. It was tough, I had people texting me, people calling me and stuff, and, you know, it was real tough to keep that mindset, but with our sport psychologist we were able to get that done." Kloos opened the scoring on a rebound 2:37 into the first period. Gostisbehere responded by weaving through three opponents and beating Wilcox with a wrist shot to glove side at 9:26. "He controlled the game," Minnesota coach Don Lucia said. "From my vantage point, he was the best player on the ice tonight." CALGARY -- Its rare to see a penalty shot in the National Lacrosse League, let alone in a playoff game. So when the Calgary Roughnecks were awarded a penalty shot down by a goal with less than a minute remaining in Game 1 of the NLL West final against the Edmonton Rush, they took full advantage of the opportunity. Curtis Dickson tied the game for Calgary with 22 seconds left on the clock, and Jeff Shattlers goal 46 seconds into overtime gave the Roughnecks the thrilling 12-11 victory. "Thats probably only the second or third (penalty shot) that Ive seen since Ive been in the league," said Dickson, who added that although it was a "nerve-wracking" experience, he felt confident making the play. "Ive been in this situation before. We need a goal late to tie it up or get the win. I just did what I know how to do. I saw my spot, took a shot at the opening, and lucky enough it went in." Leading 11-10, Edmonton had the ball in the Calgary end, and the Roughnecks had an empty net after pulling their goalie earlier. But with the play along the boards by the benches, the Rush were assessed a rarely called illegal substitution penalty. "I guess we had too many and its the last two minutes so its a penalty shot, which is fine. I dont have a problem with that except for the fact they had about nine guys on the floor too," said Edmonton coach Derek Keenan. "If theyre going to call it on us, they should have called it on them too, or not call it. It was ridiculous." Shattler, who had two goals on the night, was equally amazed. "That call that they made was pretty gutsy," he said. "Too many men with 22 seconds left. I dont know many refs that would make that call." Shattler showed off his athleticism on the winning goal. After his original shot missed the net, the ball bounced high in the air off the end boards. Shattler, who saw it the whole way, raced after it, leaped high in the air and in one motion flung the ball into the top corner past Edmonton goaltender Aaron Bold. "When I looked at Boldie, he was still looking the other way so I thought if I get up there fast enough, Ive got a chance," said Shattler. "I shot it before I even looked at the net." He didnt have to look to know it went in as a deafening roar erupted from the Scotiabank Saddledome crowd of 13,618. "Tonight was an amazing experience, it was unreal," said Shattler. Greg Harnett, Shawn Evans, Karsen Leung, Daryl Veltman, Dane Dobbie and Scott Ranger also scored for Calgary. Edmontons offence was led by Mark Matthew, who scored three goals. Robert Church and Zack Greer each had a pair, while John Lintz, Curtis Knight, Riley Loewen and Nik Bilic added singles. The two teams will play Game 2 of the West final next Friday in Edmonton. Should the Rush win that game, a 10-minute mini game will immediately follow to decide who will advance, with sudden death overtime if still tied after that. "If we play as well as we did tonight with a couple little adjustments, well have a good opportunity next week for sure. We have to worry about that first one and then go from there with that quirky 10-minute deal," said Keenan. "When push comes to shove, you cant lose those one-goal games like that being up 5-1 and not putting the foot on the pedal," said Matthews. "We didnt do that and they came out with a lot of energy in the second half and beat us." After giving up the games first goal, Edmonton scored the next five and were cruising along nicely early in the second quarter when they were held to one goal on a five-minute power play. Calgary scored three straight right after that and the game was close the rest of the way. Edmonton led 7-5 at half-time and Calgary was up 9-8 after three quarters. "I thought we played well enough to win the game, to be honest," said Keenan. "I thought we played a real good game right from the start to finish. In all areas of our game I thought we were good and it came down to a couple of breaks that they got and they got the win. It was a tough one." Notes: Edmonton won three of the four meetings during the regular season ... Calgary was without veteran Geoff Snider (lower body), injured last weekend. Snider is also the Roughnecks main face-off specialist. Garrett McIntosh took most of the draws after only taking six face-offs all season ... Alvas Powell, Maximiliano Urruti and Rodney Wallace all scored second half goals for the Timbers. The win leaped-frogged Portland over Vancouver into fifth spot. It was an embarrassing home loss for a Whitecaps team struggling to reach the playoffs. Vancouver has just two wins in their last 11 games (2-4-5). During that span the Whitecaps have managed just eight goals and has been scoreless five times, including four times in the last five games. The win gives Portland 34 points, one more than the Whitecaps, from an 8-8-10 record. Vancouver slips to sixth place with 33 points (7-6-12). A Whitecaps defensive breakdown allowed Powell to give Portland the lead in the 51st minute off a pretty pass from Diego Valeri. The Argentine midfielder threaded a ball into the box where an unmarked Powell headed it past the outstretched hands of Whitecaps goalkeeper David Ousted. It was Powells first goal of the season while Valeri picked up his team-leading ninth assist. Urruti, a second-half substitute, delivered the dagger in the 75th minute. The big forward had all the time in the world to take a pass from Michael Harrington and blast a shot that hit the crossbar and fell into the net behind Ousted. The Whitecaps goalkeeper scrambled to his feet and began yelling at his defence. Wallace made it 3-0 in the 79th minute after slipping behind the Whitecaps defence and converting a pass from Darlington Nagbe.dddddddddddd. The close Western Conference playoff battle helped produce a great atmosphere at BC Place Stadium for the match between the Cascadia rivals. Among the noisy, sellout crowd of 21,000 was a contingent of 500 Portland fans who made their presence known by chanting and waving flags. The teams were scoreless after the first half. Vancouver controlled much of the play, moving the ball with authority. A solid Timbers defence forced the Whitecaps to take their shots from the perimeter which allowed Portland goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts to track the ball. One of the Whitecaps best scoring chances came in the fifth minute. Newcomer Mauro Rosales sent a pretty crossing pass into the box which charging midfielder Pedro Morales headed over the crossbar. Darren Mattocks, a second-half substitute, came close to tying the match in the 66th minute. Midfielder Russell Teibert feathered a pass behind the Portland defence. An open Mattocks had trouble controlling the ball then fired a shot that Ricketts stopped. Both Rosales, obtained in a trade from Chivas USA, and Costa Rican centre back Kendall Watson, an international transfer, made their home debuts for the Whitecaps. TSN football analyst Chris Schultz is back with his Week 8 selections in the CFL. The Big Man finished 3-1 in Week 7, and sits at 14-14 on the season in Schultz vs. The World. Now Schultz is ready for more action, including an upset prediction in the Hamilton-Calgary game. Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Toronto Argonauts Huge preparation advantage with Toronto. Coming off the bye week, their last game was on August 1, a 31-5 win in Montreal. They had 11 days to get ready for this one. For Winnipeg, its the exact opposite. They played this past Thursday and now play again on Tuesday. Basically they have four days to get ready for the "oddball" Tuesday night game. Drew Willy threw three interceptions and fumbled once for points against Saskatchewan. He will accept, learn and rebound. But coming off such a short week, will all the other players on offence and defence do the same? If Toronto is ever going to take advantage of circumstances, this is the game. Argos over the Bombers in Toronto. Edmonton Eskimos at Ottawa Redblacks The Eskimos are staying in the East to get ready and it should mean very little as they are just a more individually talented team. It is the top defence against the ninth-best offence and even though back home the Redblacks should play a better game, a 27-11 duplication of the first meeting on July 11 is a genuine possibility. One team is processing, learning, evaluating and figuring out what they have and how to use it. The other is in position to have a great year and everything that goes with it. Edmonton over Ottawa. Calgary at Hamilton In Week 2 Hamilton lost to Edmonton by four points in a game they could have won. In Week 4 Hamilton lost in Calgary by three in a game they could have won. In Week 6 Hamilton lost to Winnipeg by one in a game they could have won. And, last week Hamilton lost in BC in again a game they could have won. When does it end, this run of "could have won"? This could be a little bit of a trap game for the Stampeders. They beat Ottawa last week and are now going east for two games, at Hamilton then in Ottawa again, before a truly critical home-and-away against Edmonton. Dan LeFevour was a short yardage quarterback, then a running quarterback, but against BC he had moments where he looked like a complete quarterback. Am I calling trap game for Calgary with Hamilton getting win number two? Yes I am. Hamilton over Calgary by three. Montreal at Saskatchewan Back home again and it may make a difference for the Riders in a positive way. On the road again and it may make a difference for the Alouettes in a negative way. Which running back George Cortez starts will be interesting to see. If they go with Jerome Messam it allows for ratio manipulation somewhere else and where exactly will also be interesting to see. Troy Smith was a 44 per cent completion quarterback at home against a good Eskimo defence. He will probably have another 44 completion performance against another good defence in Saskatchewan on the road. That is not enough. In watching video, Montreal will play better run-defence than the 191 they allowed against Edmonton. But you know Saskatchewan will test the defensive front seven of Montreal anyway. Ill take the Riders over the Alouettes. Following the Toronto Argonauts victory over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, the pick for the Argos second Week 8 game, against the BC Lions, has been added. BC Lions at Toronto Argonauts The Winnipeg Blue Bombers faced it in their last game and it will happen to the Toronto Argonauts this week, which is being forced to prepare for an important game on a very short week. Wednesday will be used to recover, review and install. The players will take time to get back in the weight room or run a bit to recover from the previous game. They will then meet with coaches to review the game in an effort to learn and continue the never ending desire to improve. Following that, they will have another meeting to install the game plan they will use against the BC Lions, which may be remarkably different depending on the assessment of the Blue Bombers game. Thursday is much more mental than physical as youre still in recovery mode from Tuesday. Friday is the only day of good practice because by then you should have bounced back physically and overall be feeling better. Saturday is the day before and the anticipation of Game #8 is pretty much all youre thinking about. Then Sunday comes and it seems like the week is an entire blur. For the Lions, things are the complete opposite. They played on Friday the previous week and this contest kicks off Sunday this week, plus they have a new "Bomber Video" to study while the Argos only have the old "Ticats video" of the Lions most recent opponent. If the Argos can get control of the penalties, they can run away with the East. The Lions are rested, while the Argos are game tested. Lions over Argos by three. BOSTON -- Carlos Beltran waited 16 years to make it to the World Series. He lasted a little more than an inning. Beltran was injured in Game 1 against the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday night when he crashed into the bullpen wall to deprive David Ortiz of a second-inning grand slam. The play turned a homer into a sacrifice fly -- saving three runs but costing the Cardinals Beltrans services for the rest of the game, and maybe longer. "Obviously, hes sore," designated hitter Allen Craig said. "But hopefully he can get back tomorrow." Beltran finished out the half-inning, rubbing his sore side, but he came out after that and was taken to a hospital for X-rays and a CT scan. The tests were all negative and Beltran will be evaluated daily, manager Mike Matheny said. A Cardinals spokesman said after the game that Beltran returned to the ballpark but would not be available for comment. "Hes a huge player for us," said starting pitcher Adam Wainwright. "Everybody knows that. We all know that." Beltran batted .296 with 24 homers and 84 RBIs in the regular season and has 12 RBIs in the playoffs this year. An eight-time All-Star, he hit .337 with 16 homers and 37 RBIs in 45 career post-season games that tied a record for a player before his first World Series appearance. Beltran struck out in his only at-bat Wednesday. The Cardinals could replace him on the roster, but he would be lost for the rest of the Series. Outfielder Adron Chambers is the likely substitute, having been left off the World Series roster when the Cardinals went with rookie infielder Kolten Wong. Game 2 is Thursday night in Boston. Beltrans catch was the rare defensive highlight on a night when the Cardinals bungled their way into an early deficit and went on to lose the Series opener 8-1. One of the best-fielding teams in the league over the regular-season, St. Louis committed three errors in all, with several other misplays that spotted Boston to a 5-0 lead after two innings. "That is not the kind of team that weve been all season," Matheny said. "Theyre frustrated, (and) Im sure embarrassed to a point. We get an opportunity to show the kind of baseball we played all season long and it didnt look anything like what we saw tonight." Shortstop Pete Kozma botched a potential inning-ending double play relay to load the bases in the first. Center fielder Shane Robinson bobbled Mike Napolis double, allowing the bases to clear. Wainwright and catcher Yadier Molina, both Gold Glove winners, allowed an easy popup to fall between them at the start of Bostons two-run second. Wainwright, who waved his arms but then made no attempt to catch the ball, said the responsibility for the misplay was "with the starting pitcher." "I called it. I waited for someone else to take charge. Thats not the way to play baseball," he said. "It was totally my error." Kozma made another error on a bouncer to his right in the second inning. Asked in the clubhouse afterward what happened, the Cardinals shortstop said, "Which one?" The three errors and four unearned runs both matched season highs for St. Louis. "Thats the game in the playoffs: You give them extra outs, theyre going to score," said Kozma, who made only nine errors all season and had never made two in a game before. "Thats how the games work: one thing happens and then youre down 3-0." St. Louis added another error, by third baseman David Freese, and a wild pitch by Carlos Martinez that put a runner on third base with nobody out in the eighth inning and led to Bostons eighth run. "Its a different game if some plays are made that are typically made. Thats a whole different story," Matheny said. "(Boston) is a good club. We know that. But Im just not going to let our guys forget were a good club, too. We make plays, we also put together tough at-bats. ... Right now this is one game that got away from us, and it was in a fashion that were not used to." Michael Stone Jersey . Were going to have a chance to get some guys back, coach Chuck Pagano said Friday. Its an opportunity to take another look at ourselves from a self-scout standpoint, kind of assess where were at and how we can get better in all three phases.A month ago, an uncharacteristically chaotic start put the Colts plans in peril.Robert Mathis, the 2013 NFL sacks champion, was suspended for the first four games because he violated the NFLs performance-enhancing substance policy and will miss the rest of the season after tearing his left Achilles tendon during a private workout while he was away from the team. Irsay was suspended six games and banned from social media by Commissioner Roger Goodell after pleading guilty to a misdemeanour count of driving while intoxicated. Indy then started the season by losing back-to-back games for the first time in Paganos three-year tenure.Since then, Indy has reverted more to the norm.Luck followed the longest losing streak of his pro career by matching a career best with four straight wins. He not only leads the league with 17 TD passes, but he also has completed a career-high 66.2 per cent of his throws and is on pace to become the first Colts quarterback to top 5,000 yards. Reggie Wayne and T.Y. Hilton are ranked among the NFLs receiving leaders, and Indy (4-2) has topped the 30-point mark three times in its last four games. The latest victory, 33-28 over the Texans, also allowed the Colts to seize control of the division. They now llead Houston (3-3) by one game and are 3-0 against division foes, with two of those wins coming on the road.ddddddddddddI think we have a lot of backbone on this team and thats been Coach Paganos ethos since Ive been with the Colts, Luck said Thursday night after the win. After the break, the Colts could get even better. Theyve relied on a mishmash of interior offensive linemen to survive the last three weeks. Now theyre hoping the extra rest will allow starting guards Jack Mewhort (ankle) and Hugh Thornton (back) to return Oct. 19 against Cincinnati.Inside the team complex, the return of Irsay was welcomed, too.We havent had a chance to talk face-to-face yet, a couple of texts here and there, Pagano said. Obviously, its great to know that he (Irsay) is going to be back full-time with us in the building and all that stuff. I know hes extremely excited about where were at, the big win obviously yesterday and all that stuff.Irsay had never missed a game as team owner and was eager to get back in the mix Friday. While he wasnt available for interviews Friday afternoon, he did break his silence on Twitter with one of his trademark contests.Oh hell, lets just give away some stuff to the best sports fans in the world,Colts Fans! Irsay wrote in announcing the contest. Good Luck and I mean Luck because 4 in a row and 1st place is sweet!Colts fans, meanwhile, couldnt ask for much more. The offence is clicking on all cylinders, the defence and kick coverage continue to get better, and Indianapolis has reclaimed its spot as the AFC South leader. Were No. 1 right now in the AFC South and that was the plan coming in to this game, running back Ahmad Bradshaw said. Got a question on rule clarification, comments on rule enforcements or some memorable NHL stories? Kerry wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn.ca! Hi Kerry, Upon watching Datsyuk`s goal against Dallas the other night, I could not help thinking what the referee who was watching his incredible deke was thinking. This also made me remember Mike Cammalleris referee high-five. Have you encountered any goal celebrations where the player used you as a prop? How about ones where you just couldnt help but laugh? Also, were you ever just in awe of a goal that was scored on the ice? All The Best, Eric G.Montreal Eric, During my 30 year NHL Officiating career, there was countless times when my jaw dropped in awe as I watched the sheer magic performed by some of the games greatest stars. I had the best seat in the house every night while following the play from a safe distance a mere 15 feet away. When the stars shone, I was able to maintain my focus and duties as a referee but my love of the game and true appreciation of their unique talents often caused me to become the biggest fan in the building. In the early days of my career, Wayne Gretzky and then Mario Lemieux provided highlight reel moves and goals on a nightly basis. There was never a game I worked involving these superstars that they failed to do something really special. The two of them had amazing vision of the ice like no other players I encountered. They were truly the best of the best during their time on the ice. The precision with which their no-look passes and shots found the intended target through sticks, skates and bodies was uncanny. The Great One was always four to five moves ahead of the game and the albatross-like reach and grace with which Super Mario swooped around opposing players and goalkeepers was mesmerizing. I remember my jaw dropping as Mario scored on a breakaway in the 1990 All-Star game which I worked and then again in the Stanley Cup Final against the Minnesota North Stars that same year. Kent Nilsson was the guy they called “Magic” for his soft hands and the tricks he could perform through his exceptional puckhandling skills. Mike Bossy always knew where the net was and his accurate shot penetrated the smallest opening imaginable, often while carrying a defender on his back or while wheeling around with his back to the goal and falling to the ice. Alex Kovalev had the hands of a surgeon. While playing s a member of the Montreal Canadiens, he scored a highlight reel goal against the Florida Panthers in my last game in Sunrise. I approached Alex immediately afterward and told him if I ever required open-heart surgery, I wanted the knife placed in his hands. It was a little unnerving when Kovi responded, “Some nights maybe not!” I was amazed by the leadership demonstrated by New York Rangers captain Mark Messier in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Final against the New Jersey Devils. Mess promised a victory that afternoon but with the Rangers down 2-1 at the end of the second period and about to start the third killing a penalty I had assessed to Esa Tikkanen for kneeing Stephane Richer, I made a bold prediction of my own. In the our dressing room, I told linesmen Pat Dapuzzo and Gerard Gauthier they could stick a fork in the Rangers because they were done, out of gas and unable to solve Devils goalie Martin Brodeur! Messier then proceeded to take the game upon his back, making good on his called shot by scoring his first hat trick as a Ranger (a natural one at that) to force Game 7 two nights later. The feat has been described as one the greatest individual efforts in the history of the game. The modern game is blessed to have so many young players like never before with soft hands and exception skills that bring us out of our seats. While I was never “high-fived” the way Erik Cole celebrated with referee Greg Kimmerly, I want to share a couple of unusual moments I encountered on the ice with two, shall I say, less gifted scorers. Steve McKenna played eight seasons in the NHL from 1996 to 2004 with four different teams (LA, Minnesota, Pittsburgh and NY Rangers). In 373 NHL games, the 68”—255 pound left winger scored a total of just 18 goals, all of which Im sure were cause for an outburst of celebration. The big guy wasnt there to put the puck in the net and picked up a total 824 penalty minutes during those seasons, most of which were for fighting. Steve was really a funny guy and kept what little hair he had cut close to the wood. We got along really well together on the ice. One game in the Igloo in Pittsburgh, McKenna was in the middle of a scrum and before he got rolling, I grabbed the giant by the sweater to get his attention. I only stood as tall as McKennas belly button but I told him if he didnt break it up, I was going to “kick the %^&* out of him myself!” That immediately got the Penguins tough guys attention. Steve got a big grin on his face and, looking downward lightly, speed-bagged my chin with his two fists as he rolled his tongue with a “bdllllllllllt” sound. McKenna then picked up his gloves and skated to his players bench! The altercation was over before it even got started as my chin was used a prop. The most bizarre goal scoring celebration ritual I ever saw occurred from John Flesch, who, like Steve McKenna, shaved his head to the wood. For his own personal safety, given Fleschs unorthodox method of celebration, he is probably fortunate to have scored just 18 goals in 124 NHL games during parts of four seasons with Minnesota, Pittsburgh and Colorado. Whenever Flesch dented the twine and the red light flashed, the big guy would charge full speed and launch into the glass with his bald head. I also saw Flesch crank himself in the head with his hockey stick in celebration of scoring a goal while playing in the Minnesota North Star organization with the New Haven Knighthawks of the AHL. Being just an 18-goal scorer was a gift to the mans health! Cheap MLB Jerseys Authentic . Ho-Sang is a highly regarded prospect, as seen in TSNs Midseason Rankings. Canadas Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford skated into second place following the pairs short program of the inaugural figure skating team event Thursday in Sochi, Russia. The Canadians finished with a score of 73.10, using precision timing and solid jumping. Reigning world champions Tatiana Volosozhar and Maxim Trankov of Russia nearly broke their own world record after a superb short program. The Russians took a sizeable lead over Duhamel and Radford with 83.79 points. Chinas Cheng Peng and Hao Zhang are third with 71.01 points. Every first-place finisher of the four disciplines - men, women, ice dance and pairs - receives 10 points, second place gets nine, third earns eight, and so forth. After the mens and pairs short programs, Russia leads with 19 points, followed by Canada (17) and China (15). Duhamel and Radford, the 2013 world bronze medallists, fed off the crowd and their teammates. Skating to music composed by Radford as a tribute to late coach Paul Wirtz, the Canadians opened with a strong throw triple twist before Duhamel nailed a throw triple jump later in the program. Duhamel, of of Lively, Ont., and Radford, of Balmertown, Ont., ended with a death spiral to the delight of their compatriots, which included Olympic ice dance champions Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir. But the day belonged to Volosozhar and Trankov, who sent their Russian fans into a frenzy with a brilliant performance. The highlight came in the opening moments as they delivered a perfect throw triple twist that generated mesmerizing height. The pair also converted all of their jumps. In the mens short program, Torontos Patrick Chan struggled to a third-place finish. The three-time world champion looked shaky during his program and finished with a score of 89.71. Japanese sensation Yuzuru Hanyu had a near-flawless routine, earning a score of 97.98 to take first place. Russian Evgeni Plushenko, the 2006 Olympic gold medallist, sits in second with 91.39 points. Each country gets a chance to switch up two competitors between the short and long programs, which may mean Chan would give way to Kevin Reynolds after the short, while Dylan Moscovitch and Kirsten Moore-Towers may replace Duhamel and Radford. He was back at practice Wednesday.LANDOVER, Md. - On fourth down, feeling the season was on the line, Tony Romo dropped back, scrambled forward and found the correct colour uniform. DeMarco Murray made the catch, his momentum taking him into the end zone for the winning score. For much of the second half, Romo and Dallas Cowboys had flirted with their usual December swoon. A recently signed fullback lost a fumble. The quarterback threw a bad interception. An eight-point lead became a nine-point deficit. Murray lost 9 yards on a third-and-goal at the 1. But there was one chance left to pull off a win. Romo-to-Murray converted the fourth-and-goal at the 10 with 1:08 remaining Sunday, giving the Cowboys a 24-23 victory over the Washington Redskins. "We just had to make a play," Dallas receiver Dez Bryant said. "Tony did a Houdini." Its a magic moment that matters only if the Cowboys can win one more. The victory ended a two-game skid — as well as a four-game December losing streak — and sets up a winner-take-all, regular-season finale for the NFC East title next week, when the Cowboys (8-7) host the Philadelphia Eagles. "Today we felt like we were playing for everything," Romo said. "Next week will be the same thing." The Cowboys, who beat Philadelphia 17-3 on Oct. 20, set themselves up to quash two years of 8-8, collapse-around-Christmas misery. "I know in some ways weve gotten hit with just the fact of losing the last couple of years in the final game," Romo said. "I think were the only team that keeps getting themselves in position to win the NFC East every year — thats a credit. Its also a negative in the fact that we didnt do it the last couple of years." The Cowboys melted down big-time last week against the Green Bay Packers, blowing a 23-point lead with Romo throwing two interceptions in the waning minutes. On Sunday, the Cowboys fell flat in the third quarter instead of the fourth, leaving just enough time for a comeback. "Coming back and playing well and working hard can help your character. Now, I dont recommend the way we came back today as a way to get there," Dallas owner Jerry Jones said with a smile. "I wouldve liked for it to be a little easier and confident." The Redskins (3-12) arent building much of anything. They lost their seventh straight, thee second in a row by one point, both with Kirk Cousins starting in place of shut-down franchise player Robert Griffin III.dddddddddddd Pierre Garcon (11 catches, 144 yards) provided the home team highlight by breaking Art Monks single-season franchise reception record, while veteran linebacker London Fletcher played in what is expected to be his final home game before retiring. Embattled coach Mike Shanahan clinched his worst record in his 20 seasons as a head coach. "Everybody on the team is fed up at this point," Washington linebacker Perry Riley said. "We should be winning. Need to be winning. Were not winning. And thats frustrating." Romo completed 17 of 27 passes for 226 yards with two touchdowns and played much of the game with back pain. He was limping noticeably after a couple of plays in the fourth quarter. "I took a hit that kind of triggered it a little bit. ... I felt it after that play, the rest of the game," Romo said. "You just play through it, just like anything in football." The Cowboys led 14-6 at halftime before committing turnovers on back-to-back drives — a fumble by Tyler Clutts and an interception by DeAngelo Hall. The Redskins scored on three straight possessions and took a 23-14 lead on the first play of the fourth quarter. But Romo converted a fourth-and-6 at the Washington 40-yard line to set up a field goal that cut the lead to six with 6:09 to play. The Cowboys started the go-ahead drive at their 13 with 3:39 remaining. A 51-yard pass to Terrance Williams set up the winning score, with the Cowboys surviving the 9-yard loss by Murray when knocking on the door at the 1. "A couple of self-inflicted wounds in the second half hurt us," Dallas coach Jason Garrett said. "But you keep playing. Our guys scratched, clawed, and fought." Notes: Michael Spurlock, signed Wednesday because of an injury to Dwayne Harris, set up a TD with a 62-yard punt return in the first quarter. ... Murray ran for 96 yards, becoming the first Cowboys back to rush for 1,000 yards since Julius Jones in 2006. ... The Cowboys are 5-0 in the NFC East; the Redskins are 0-5. ... TORONTO -- Head coach Scott Milanovich will have to look for another big-play threat coming out of the Toronto Argonauts backfield this season. Veteran halfback Chad Kackert retired Sunday, the opening day of the CFL teams training camp. The five-foot-eight, 206-pound Kackert led Toronto to victory in the historic 100th Grey Cup in 12 but has been slow recovering from a broken left leg suffered prior to last years East final. Kackert, 27, will remain with the Argos as their strength-and-conditioning coach. Hell also continue working to rehab his leg and hasnt completely closed the door on resuming his pro career. "Never say never," he said. "I just dont feel like Im anywhere close to being ready to play football, its an issue of range of motion, to be specific. "I want my leg to get better just because who wants to walk around on a gimpy leg the rest of his life? If its sooner rather than later then I will re-evaluate but as of right Im going to get my leg better and coach this team as far as strength and conditioning goes." Despite playing just three seasons in Toronto, Kackert quickly emerged as an offensive threat. He rushed for 1,467 yards on 228 carries -- an impressive 6.4-yard average -- with 12 touchdowns while adding 50 receptions for 454 yards, two TDs. "Chad was a home-run hitter," Milanovich said. "Hed get a crease and could go to the house and thats nice. "He also brought an intangible. The players loved seeing him succeed. When he got the ball and did well, it just kind of ignited our football team. Well see whos around to replace that but well certainly miss those things." Kackert rushed for 638 yards on 100 carries during the 2012 season -- both career highs -- but was at his best in the playoffs. He ran for 139 yards and a TD in Torontos 27-20 road win over Montreal in the East Division final. The next week before over 50,000 fans at Rogers Centre, Kackert was named the MVP of the 100th Grey Cup game, rushing for 133 yards on 20 carries and recording eight catches for 62 yards in the Argos 35-22 win over the Calgary Stampeders. Kackert appeared in just nine games last year, rushing for 480 yards rushing on 71 carries (6.8-yard average) as Toronto (11-7) finished atop the East Division to secure home-field for the conference final. But Kackert didnt play in the Argos 36-24 loss to Hamilton, breaking his left leg during practice. "It was a no-contact practice, freak injury," Kackert said. "I was just running a route, didnt see the defensive end running his twist. "We knocked shoulders and my foot caught the turf and that was it." Injuries plagued the hard-running Kackert throughout his brief Argos tenure but he knew immediately this one was serious. "It hurt," the former University of Hampshire star said. Still, Kackert spent the off-season working to strengthen his leg, accepting he might even have to spend the early part of the season on the injured list before returning. But Kackert realized Friday he simply wasnt ready to go. "I dont want a handout," he said. "I dont want to come on to a team and take a paycheque while Im sitting around not helping anybody. "Im in a position now where I can help people. Its a different contract but its a priceless opportunity." Milanovich wasnt surprised about Kackerts retirement. "I wasnt expecting him to be here as a player," Milanovich said. "It was a very serious injury, particularly with his style of playing using his quickness and speed, and we were planning all along, unfortunately, to have to replace him." But not let him go altogether. Milanovich said he and GM Jim Barker began discussing about two weeks ago the possibility of offering the immensely popular Kackert the strength-and-conditioning position. "Kack is such an integral part of our team," Milanovich said. "Kack is too good a person to not find a way to let him and make him be a part of this. "Thats where it started and we were lucky it was something he was interested in." Very interested, as it turns out. "Its very important to me because Ive fallen in love with this city and Ive kind of established a home base out here," he said. "Jim is never going to make a decision thats going to hinder the team or not get it to the Grey Cup. "Im really honoured to be able to stay here and help get the guys back to where we need to go." However, Kackert admitted it felt a little odd Sunday in his new job. "Its a little tiring standing for three, four hours straight," he said with a chuckle. "But it felt good, the guys are buying in and I appreciate that from them. "Theyre calling me, Coach, already and asking me for workout tips. It will be fun. Im going to learn a lot, theyre going to learn a lot." Teammate Chad Owens was shocked to learn of Kackerts decision "He told me about it (Saturday) and I was kind of lost for words," Owens said. "Its sad because injuries happen in this game, we all understand that . . . but there are certain guys you pray and hope nothing but great things for just because theyre good people. "Kack is probably the most genuine person Ive ever encountered. He is the epitome of a team player. Im going to miss going into battle with him out there on the field because he brought everything he had. He was a playmaker." Kackerts departure creates an open race for the starters job among the seven running backs in camp. Sophomore Curtis Steele does have the benefit of experience in Torontos offence but Milanovich said rookie Anthony Coombs, Torontos 2014 first-round pick, remains very much in the picture. "Its wide open," Milanovich said. "Curtis has an advantage because hes been here and been in the offence but it could be any of those guys at this point." The five-foot-nine, 190-pound Coombs, a Winnipeg native who played at the University of Manitoba, said Kackerts retirement hasnt changed his approach. "Its pretty much the same because we had a lot of good backs that just came in this year," he said. "Its not like its free pickings now. "It (starting) is a huge possibility . . . but you cant think too far ahead. Ive just got to get used to the speed of the game and its coming along slowly but surely. Whether Kackert is in or out I still have the same mentality: Show up to practice, learn the playbook and get better." NOTES -- Lost in Kackerts retirement was Toronto released offensive lineman Scott Mitchell on Sunday. Mitchell was selected second overall by Edmonton in 2011 and signed with the Argos in the off-season as a free agent. He failed his physical Saturday but theres word the expansion Ottawa Redblacks have an interest in the former Rice star . . . With nothing tangible at stake, the Raptors turned in their most impressive outing of the fall in their seventh and second to last exhibition tilt against their stiffest competition yet, but they lost a couple starters in the process.TORONTO – Three-and-a-half hours before Wednesdays series finale with the Yankees, the Blue Jays issued a surprising media release announcing the demotion of Kevin Pillar to Triple-A Buffalo. This is far from an earth-shattering move, Pillar was the 25th-man, but the shock lies in his return to the Bisons just 48 hours after his latest recall and in the reasons why hes Buffalo-bound. Pillar and Anthony Gose were supposed to be the right-field platoon while Jose Bautista recovers from a mild strain of his left hamstring. The contract of outfielder Brad Glenn, a 23rd-round pick in 2009, has been purchased. “Were looking for a little more sock from the right side,” said manager John Gibbons. “Weve got three left-handed pitchers coming in from the White Sox and Glenn, hes been on fire down there, as well. So this is his opportunity.” When pressed for more, Gibbons acknowledged Pillars behaviour in the eighth inning of Tuesday nights game played a part in the decision. The score was 6-6 at the time. The Jays had loaded the bases with one out. Pillar was due up but the Yankees flame-throwing set-up man, Dellin Betances, was on the mound. Gibbons pinch hit Anthony Gose. Pillar reacted. He stormed into the dugout. Footage shows him angrily tossing his helmet and ripping off his batting gloves as he walked from Gibbonss end of the dugout to the other. He then tossed his bat, underhanded, down the tunnel leading to the clubhouse. “It didnt help him at all,” said Gibbons. “This is a team game, you know. Theres no room for selfish play. But weve been thinking about Glenn for a while now, anyway.” Glenn has given the Blue Jays plenty to ponder. In 113 at-bats with Buffalo since his promotion from Double-A New Hampshire, the 27-year-old has hit .381/.421/.575 with four home runs and eight doubles among his 43 hits. To make room for Glenn on the 40-man roster, the Blue Jays designated infielder Jonathan Diaz for assignment. THE OUTSIDE CORNER Play a baseball game and inevitably someone will have something to say about the home plate umpires strike zone. Pitchers and hitters develop reputations, to the positive or negative, which can influence the way the game is called. What goes less noticed is how one pitch called incorrectly can affect the remainder of an at-bat. Take Colby Rasmuss three-pitch, caught-looking strikeout in the second inning of Tuesday nights 7-6 win over the Yankees. The first pitch was a David Phelps cut fastball off the outside corner of the plate for a called strike. This is the pitch that changed the at-bat. Pitch two: A knuckle-curve Rasmus fouled off. Pitch three: A cut fastball on the inside corner. The pitch crossed the plate, therefore it was a strike. The correct call was made. The problem: Rasmus was forced to adjust his approach after the first pitch to account for the wide strike zone. “Colbys told me he starts gettting bigger to protect and then he starts chasing balls all over the place,” said hitting coach Kevin Seitzer.dddddddddddd “I said, ‘Do not change your zone and if they call it, they call it, but you cant change your zone. Do not expand. If they throw three out there and get called, come back and sit down by me.” When pressed for comment, Rasmus politely declined. Good move on his part - he doesnt need the trouble. Adam Lind has also fallen victim to calls off the outside corner. Its common around the game, certainly not exclusive to the Blue Jays. “They both have really good eyes and they look for pitches on the plate and thats what theyre geared to do mentally and I dont want that to change with any of our hitters,” said Seitzer. “Its just a part of the way games always been. (Umpires) are human. Theyre not perfect. Theyre going to make mistakes. You cant expect them to be perfect but I dont want our hitters to change their zone ever in any way, shape or form.” Both Rasmus and Lind have laid-back personalities. Its rare to see either be demonstrative with an umpire. Seitzer appreciates their respectful approach, but he wants them to converse. If a pitch was off the plate, hes encouraged Rasmus and Lind to let the umpire know. Seitzer will accept from his hitters called third strikes on pitches out of the zone. He firmly believes Rasmus, whos prone to the swing-and-miss, having struck out in 33.5 per cent of his plate appearances this season, ends up offering at pitches he otherwise wouldnt due to frustration. Seitzers been a sounding board for his frustrated charges. “All I can do is be supportive,” said Seitzer. “Youve got a great eye. Its not a pitch you want to go on, so you cant go. And you cant even think that theyre going to go back out there because of what happens there, you get locked up on paint inside.” LINDS FOOT Adam Lind fouled a pitch off his right toe in the seventh inning of Tuesday nights game. “Ouch. Thats what I said,” said Lind. Surely he must have cussed? “It was more just deep breaths.” Lind returned to the starting lineup on Monday for the first time since fouling a pitch off the top of his right foot on June 14 in Baltimore. He had three pinch-hit appearances in the seven games in between. Linds wearing a guard on his shin, which extends to the top of his foot. In Wednesday nights series finale versus the Yankees, Lind made his first start at first base since suffering the injury. TOLLESONS EYE Blue Jays utility infielder Steve Tolleson is dealing with an eye problem that cropped up on the last road trip. Hes got dryness and blurriness, especially in his right eye.Tolleson had laser eye surgery five years ago, but its unclear if this is a factor in any way.Hell be seeing a cornea specialist on Thursday, marking a fourth-straight day that hell see an eye doctor of some description.
